The Gilbert Christian Knights basketball team is more ready than ever but will this preparation go to waste?

With recent COVID-19 activity and the cancelation of many sports already, many wonder if this could go into the basketball season. “I don't think we will have much of a season; I think we will start and then get shut down.” said varsity player Wyatt Kelly.

Avid fans of GCS basketball look forward to the season with high hopes with talent like Wyatt Kelly and Abert Wilson replacing the talent that left last year. Albert is a sophomore, standing at 6’5 playing starting center. This is his first year at GCS. His size and talent will only be increased and enhanced by his teammates. One in particular, Wyatt Kelly, whose ball skills are unmatched and have only increased over the summer. Hoping to return to the final four, like the year before, the Knights are more ready than ever.

The first day of practice started Monday and the boys got to it. Starter Karsten Gargan is very hopeful for the year, “I want to be more than a team this year; I want a brotherhood.” The team will be better conditioned than any other year and ready for any team they face. Especially against ALA Queen Creek, Fountain Hills, and Scottsdale Christian, the most looked forward to games in their schedule.

COVID-19 has taken over the entirety of this year and has made it one of the worst years possible. With cancelations of sports and everyday activities and even for a short time leaving your home, it has been a wild year. Football teams around the US have experienced cancelations of their entire season, and even Gilbert Christian experienced a lost game due to this virus. With this happening to sports already, right now, the outlook for upcoming seasons may not be in the highest regards. The one main question everyone has is, "How long will this wild year last?".

Basketball player Caden Heyn said he agreed with his teammate that they would start and get shut down, “No players have COVID-19 yet, that I know of, but I'm excited for the season to start, everyone is.” Everyone on campus is excited for basketball season, we all pray that they will have it.
