Ethan Pomerenke is a current junior at Gilbert Christian High School. He is a great student and also plays on our school basketball team. He has played the previous two years and has contributed a lot to the team in various ways. Ethan said, “I played big man the last two years even though I’m not that tall, but I might move to forward this season. I’ll just play whatever position my coach puts me in.”

With the coronavirus affecting schools and sports this year, I asked Ethan what he thought the season would look like and how he was feeling towards it. If he thought the season would still continue to go on like it was planned or if COVID-19 would ruin his chances to enjoy his season and sport. “ I think the season will be somewhat normal, at least as normal as possible with COVID. I hope that it goes smoothly, but I don’t know how things will change in the next couple of months.”

I next asked if he was excited for the upcoming 2020-2021 season and he said he was. When asked if he thought there would be a season he replied, “I think there will be a season because the fall sports teams are having their seasons. A lot could change in the next few months though.”

“My favorite part of the season are game days and the excitement of playing,” Ethan told me. “I am most excited about and looking forward to just getting back to playing games. It’s been a crazy year and just being able to compete again is exciting.”

With new players added to the roster this year and returning players from last year Ethan stated that, “I think all three teams will be very good this year. There’s a whole lot of young talent coming up and the skill across the board is great.”

Finally I asked Ethan why do you play basketball? What motivates him to spend his time participating in this team sport. “I play basketball because it’s fun and I love the game. I’m not the most talented person out there, but I’ve been playing for my whole life and just enjoy basketball.”

After all of what has happened in the past year we hope that there will be a basketball season. We know that Ethan Pomeremke is excited to play, and we are all definitely excited to watch him.
