The Lady Matadors celebrate after the final point

(PHOENIX)- “If you don’t want to play, then get off the court!” one mother from Moon Valley High School angrily yelled from the stands. The freshman volleyball match between Shadow Mountain High School and Moon Valley was intense to say the least.

The first match began with Moon Valley going back to serve and drilling it into the net. It was here that the tensions already began to rise. The Moon Valley parents made their presence very known in the gym by chanting “Sideout! Sideout!”

The beginning of the match was what one might call ping-pong volleyball: each team scoring one point at a time keeping the score neck-and-neck. That was until a suspenseful rally filled with dives, swings and loud calls broke out. The rally ended by a dropped freeball on Shadow Mountain leading them to call a timeout with Moon Valley ahead 13-8.

Whatever Lady Matador oach Billy Hickson said in huddle clearly worked. Shadow Mountain returned to the court ready to dominate. Brinley Lensch went on a five-point serving spree, tying the score at 15. Moon Valley began to feel the heat and called their first time out.

Both teams returned to the court louder and more pumped up than ever. A symphony of young teenage girls and angry competitive dads echoed throughout the gym, “Stay on your toes!” “Mine!” “I got it!”. Shadow Mountain and Moon Valley battled to the very end until libero Taylor Welch got a kill from the back row making the final score 25-21 in the first game.

The second match began with Brinley Lensch leading the Matadors on an eight-point serving run. The Rockets were clearly distressed, making subsitutions and changing rotation on the court, all with no luck against Lensch's powerful arm.

The girls of Moon Valley felt the pressure and began arguing with one another on the court. This led to the down ref to calling them in to calm them down.

The match became a game of Shadow Mountain's mistakes: giving points to Moon Valley through dropped balls and missed serves. Coach Hickson called a time out in order to let the girls recuperate and finish out the game. Outside hitter Samantha Torrez was able to secure the win with a deep line shot. The final score was 25-15.
