Elli Wolthuis is a journalism student at Gilbert Christian High School assigned to cover high school sports for AZPreps365.com

Caden Heyn is a player on the varsity basketball team at Gilbert Christian. He talks about the struggles that came with COVID-19, and how it has been affecting their season. Currently the team is 7-3 and ready to get back into their rhythm.

“This season has definitely been a different experience, like the masks, having no student fans, and starting super late,” says Caden, “Hopefully by the end of season things will start to get a little more normal, but until then, we just have to deal with it.” Caden believes that the team just needs more energy and enthusiasm to make this season the best one yet, even with all the unfortunate circumstances. “The season just seems rushed since we had to start so late and I think getting all connected again will take a little longer.”

What is your favorite thing about the season? “Probably the road trips to different schools and just bonding with my teammates. I also love getting and seeing all the new gear for the season.”

How long have you been playing basketball? “I have been playing basketball since I was at least four years old back when I lived in Minnesota.”

Why do you love playing basketball? “ I love this sport because I love the competitiveness of it, and being able to compete. It gives me a chance to meet new people and create new relationships.”

Where does your motivation come from, since there are no fans this season? “My motivation comes from wanting to do well for the rest of the team, especially for the seniors. It also comes from just wanting to get better and improve so that next year we will be unstoppable.”

Caden is optimistic about the rest of the basketball season and hopes things start to get a little more normal soon. Go Knights!
