It was a good thing Marisa Davis decided ultimately to hang around Valley Vista for her senior hoops season. The Monsoon needed all Davis, a four-year starter could, yield on Saturday night at Mesquite High School.

Davis scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and broke a 31-31 tie in the final five minutes as the impetus to a 49-41 win over long-time adversary Hamilton.

Davis has been part of three titles - 2020 and 2018 prior. The program has won four titles in the last five years. It's the second year in a row Valley Vista (17-1) has knocked off Hamilton (19-2), who has won the other two big-school titles over the last six seasons - 2016 and 2019.

Valley Vista held off Hamilton most of the way after amassing a 13-4 lead after one quarter. Hamilton's Amyah Reaves headlined a comeback from a 25-14 deficit early in the third period. The Huskies caught up at 31 with 5:41 to play on a Graciela Roybal layup.

Over the next 9- seconds Davis made three free throws - the first breaking the tie. Next came a steal and layup that was all hers and two more free throws giving the Monsoon a 38-34 lead.

Davis teammates took over the final four minutes with Mikela Cooper (10 points) making a basket and four free throws and Olivia Arvallo ( 8 points) and Zaria Watkins chipping in a couple points each. Valley Vista's lead was 10 (46-36) with a minute left closing out Hamilton's big to regain the championship.

The 5-foot-6 Reaves ended a briliant career with 18 points, nine rebounds and three steals, put couldn't finish several good shots going 5 for 19 from the field.
