The energy and anticipation were in the air at the first official home game for Scottsdale Prep as they cruised past Madison Prep, 62-0.

The Spartans, now 5-0, put on a show for the home crowd starting with the first-ever play in the new stadium. Senior Carson Boyll took the kickoff into Madison Highland territory and was downed at the 1-yard line.

Everyone thought Boyll was going to score. As he was tripped up and downed at the 1, the “aw” was as loud as the cheering had been from the home crowd. Boyll himself thought he was going to score.

“On the first play, I was running down there, and I said, ‘no way this is happening on the first play’ and it ended up not happening because I got tripped up. But there's more to come, so I'm just glad all my dogs got to eat,” Boyll said.

That definitely was the case. Junior QB Tyler Johnson ran in the touchdown from the 1-yard line to open the scoring early. It was one of seven total touchdowns for Johnson on the night, including four to senior Devon Strader.

When asked about what contributed to their success tonight, they attributed it to the players around them.

“It was just a lot of good play-calling and good throws,” Strader said. The senior moved inside to slot receiver for the first time this season, and it certainly paid off.

“All I had to do was put the ball in my playmakers’ hands and let them make big plays. We had some mistakes here and there, but we’ll clean it up in practice next week,” Johnson said.

It was hard to find many mistakes made by the Spartans, though. Aside from one interception in the end zone from Johnson and a fumble late in the third quarter, the team looked dominant. They limited Madison Highland to zero points defensively as well.

Scottsdale Prep head coach David Primavera was especially pleased with zero points allowed from the defense.

“The defense contributed to a lot of the points on the offense, and it certainly is awesome hanging up a zero on the scoreboard for the other team. It’s nice no one besides us has scored in our end zones yet,” Primavera joked.

The defense accounted for six turnovers, including four interceptions. They also accounted for five tackles-for-loss in the first half alone.

Everyone felt the excitement from the start. It was the beginning of something special at Scottsdale Prep, and this football team is leading the way.

The team is still undefeated with a point differential of +197 through five games. They take on North Pointe Prep next Friday in Phoenix and then return home to host Valley Lutheran.

Madison Highland Prep falls to 1-5 after their second loss this season to Scottsdale Prep. The Heat take on Valley Lutheran next Friday.
