There’s a budding 5A Conference rivalry that continues to gain traction.

The teams, Sunrise Mountain and Millennium, met for a title two years ago and played again Thursday with a high seed likely at stake in the non-region game. Millennium is the three-time defending champ, but Thursday belonged to Sunrise Mountain.

Despite Elli Guiney’s game-high 32 points and 12 threes from Millennium, Sunrise Mountain claimed its biggest win of the season so far, 71-63 in overtime. The victory came on Millennium’s turf and in front of a very vocal home crowd.

Sunrise Mountain also brought its cheering section. What Millennium didn’t have was its ace, guard Trayanna Crisp.

The injured Arizona State commit hasn’t played since a January 17 game. She was walking around before and after Thursday’s game and might suit up for the playoffs, according to her coach.

But take nothing away from Sunrise Mountain’s victory. The team is 19-2 for a reason.

The two well-coached teams had different players taking turns making clutch shots. It just came down to executing in the final four minutes.

“As a coach, if you can say, 'Let’s get a road win against a really tough team right before the playoffs,'” Sunrise Mountain coach Jenn Tolle said. "That’s a great confidence boost for your team. You learn a lot about yourself playing in games like that. I think that gives them some confidence. It gives them some exposure to the late game situations we haven’t had a ton of this season, so that was a great win for us.”

Sunrise Mountain has three regular season games left before the playoffs begin.

Same goes for 14-9 Millennium.

“Obviously missing Trayanna is always a hurt, but we had an opportunity to put that game away,” Millennium coach Kevin Thomas said. “We were up by seven, I want to say with three minutes maybe two left. But honestly I give credit to Sunrise for clawing back and making us make plays. They forced us to make something happen, and we didn’t finish and they did. We need to get better. They played well. They are a good team, and they earned it and took it from us. I give them nothing but respect.”
