Impact of kickers, punters should not be overlooked

A lot of attention is being paid to the football players who pass the ball, catch it and run with it. They are important reasons why their teams have reached the championship games on Saturday (Dec. 4) for Class 4A schools and Dec. 13 (Monday) for the 5A schools.

But let us not overlook the men who boot the ball.

Kickers and punters are extremely important in terms of field position and where the opponent starts its drive. A difference of 10 or 15 yards can make a huge difference.

I have seen several kickers boot the ball into the end zone with uncanny regularity in the playoffs. Starting at the 20, or inside the 20 in the case of a punt, can wear the opponent down.

If you can, take a moment to marvel at what they can do.
