McClintock filled its vacant varsity football coaching opening Tuesday hiring Saguaro offensive coordinator Matt Lewis.

Lewis confirmed his hiring and met with McClintock players earlier Tuesday. He replaces Mike Gibbons who was fired in November after the season.

"I kept an eye out for what I thought would be a good fit and McClintock was one of the places I thought might be," Lewis said. "We've played them so much the last few years (4A Desert Sky). They seem to have talent. It's a matter of being able to figure out how to put it together. They could be a sleeping giant."

Lewis said McClintock players were very receptive to the meeting with their new coach. He is anxious to get started at his second head coaching assignment.

Lewis was head coach and athletic director at Allen Academy in Bryan, Texas for three seasons (2004-06). He served as an assistant in the late 1990s at Saguaro . Lewis returned a third time to Saguaro John Sanders in 2007.
