Volleyball races entering home stretch

Volleyball has three weeks left in its regular season and teams are trending in every division and section. Automatic state playoff berths go to section champs only and the rest are at-large bids based on power-rankings. Here's a peek at section leaders and races as regular-season play dominates now through Oct. 30:

DIVISION I

Section I: Centennial currently leads with 4-0 record. Chased by Sandra Day O'Connor, Pinnacle and Mtn. Ridge. Section II: Houses most of the top eight teams in division led by Desert Vista and Hamilton. DV and Hamilton have a chance to distance themselves in the section from the rest this week. DV hosts Perry and visits Gilbert; Hamilton visits Basha and hosts Mtn. Pointe. Section III: Belongs to Xavier. Unbeaten and has already defeated the two teams closest to it. Sported best record nine days ago at Gilbert Invitational (7-0) facing many of D-I's top title contenders. Section IV: Millennium is in good shape at 4-0. Only team near top of section it hasn't faced is Tolleson. That matchup may be mute point come final week of season.

DIVISION II

Section I: Arcadia and Mesquite unbeaten in section to date. Marcos de Niza and Campo Verde still lurking, but it may come down to Mesquite-Arcadia match on Oct. 27 to decide the champ. Section II: Salpointe and Sahuaro are the top teams and unbeaten in section. They are still yet to meet and might get a challenge from Rincon before its over. Section III: Sunnyslope leads and doesn't figure to lose its lead currently unbeaten. Already defeated second-place Notre Dame. Only challenger left might be Verrado, but Sunnyslope is easily one of top three teams in the division. Section IV: Gila Ridge appears to be the team to beat in the Yuma section. It swept Kofa in a section match and has swept Lake Havasu in a freedom match. Not a lock to win section, but seem to be the best team. Section V: Ironwood Ridge is dominating. Has swept every power-ranking match it has played other than its lone loss to D-I Hamilton last week, which it led 2-0 before falling. As dominant in the division as Sunnyslope.

DIVISION III

Section I: Monument Valley is No. 1 in current division power rankings and tied with Tuba City for section lead. Monument Valley and Tuba City meet Tuesday night (Oct. 14) at Monument Valley. Monument Valley defeated Tuba 3-1 earlier. Section II: Appears to be a two-team race between Empire and Amphitheater. They play one another on Oct. 23 at Amphi. Section III: Cactus (7-0) clearly in command and essentially wraps up section title with a win Oct. 14 at home vs. Greenway. Section IV: Division power Flagstaff in first with a sweep over Snowflake already and Coconino coming later. They are the closest teams to Flag. Seems likely another section crown going to Eagles. Section V: Saguaro (5-0) as a one-game lead on Seton Catholic (4-1) in the section and owns a 3-0 sweep over Seton last month. That triumph is likely going to be the difference for Saguaro to claim section.

DIVISION IV

Section I: A  three-team battle among Pinon, Round Valley and Ganado. All are 2-0 in section and face one another in final three weeks starting with Pinon at Round Valley on Thursday (Oct. 16). Section II: Horizon Honors stumbled in one section match and has a chance to make amends Tuesday (Oct. 14) hosting Valley Christian, unbeaten in the section at 4-0. Horizon Honors' section loss isn't as damaging since Parker has lost twice since beating HH. Plenty of folks in the race still with Tempe Prep (3-1), Yuma Catholic (2-1) and Parker (4-2) looming. If Valley Chistian defeats Horizon Honors it will own victories over HH, Tempe Prep and Parker. That would make VC the team to beat. Section III: Thatcher at 4-0 is on is way to the section title. It has beaten second-place Tanque Verde and shouldn't face a challenge in the section down the stretch. Section IV: Similar to Section III, but everyone in the section already has a loss. About as tight a title chase as you'll see. Northland Prep (4-1), Sedona Red Rock (4-1), Northwest Christian (4-1)  and Scottsdale Christian (3-1).To tight to project. If only every section could be so competitive. Section V: Chandler Prep leads with a 3-0 mark and can put a wrap on section crown by beating San Manuel at home Tuesday (Oct. 14).

DIVISION V

Section I: Shonto Prep lead at 4-0 over Rock Point (2-0) and Ash Fork (2-0). Shonto has back-to-back road matches Oct. 21 (Rock Point) and Oct. 24 (Ash Fork). Those are matches of decision for the section. Section II: Pima (5-0) appears to be in a battle with Desert Christiain (4-1) and St. David (4-2). Not so. Pima has swept both schools in previous matches and needs to win three of four matches over the middle and bottom teams of the section to clinch officially. Section III: Three unbeaten teams to date -- Glendale Prep (9-0), Joy Christiain (9-0), Phoenix Christian (6-0). The frontrunners are Glendale Prep and Joy, who have swept every section opponent so far. Joy Christian has its destiny in front of the next two days vistiing Phoenix Christian Tuesday (Oct. 14) and hosting Glendale Prep (Oct. 15). Glendale Prep is at Phoenix Christian Oct. 21, but the section title match my ride on the OCt. 15 outcome (Joy-Glendale). Section IV: Joseph City (4-0), St. Johns (4-0) and Arete Prep (3-0. Three successive matches for Joseph City starting Friday (Oct. 17) are home vs. Arete Prep, Oct. 21 (home vs. St. Johns) and Oct. 22 (at Ray). Joseph City is 10-1 overall in power-ranking matches. Ray and St. Johnson a few notchs behnd. Section V: Arizona Lutheran tops the section at 3-0 followed by Immaculate Heart (2-0) and Gilbert Classical (1-0). Lots of matches left, but ALA is team to beat. Has one of the best strength of schedule ratiings in D-V and has played many top teams in D-IV. ALA visits Gilbert Classical Thursday (Oct. 16) and travels to Immaculate Heart on Oct. 28.

NOTE:  At this point divisions that could have a section champ not in the top 16 of the final power rankings and consequently bumping an at-large team from postseason are Divison II, Section 1, Division III, Section 2 and perhaps Division IV, Section 1.
