Despite losing their final game in pool play on Monday, Gilbert High and Mesquite advanced to Saturday's championship game of the annual Scottsdale Quarterback Club Baseball Invitational.

None of the 10 teams in the tournament were unscathed. Gilbert and Mountain Pointe posted 3-1 records in Pool A, which also included Chaparral (2-2), Boulder Creek (2-2) and Highland (0-4). By virtue of beating Mountain Pointe head to head, 17-7, Gilbert hosts Saturday's title game against Pool B winner Mesquite at noon. Gilbert beat Boulder Creek 7-1 and Highland 12-7 in addition to Mountain Pointe. Gilbert dropped a 9-1 decision to Chaparral on Monday.

Mesquite (3-1) had the best record in Pool B as it defeated Desert Mountain (8-3), Desert Ridge (10-4) and Horizon (5-3) before losing to Saguaro on Monday, 9-5. Defending 5A-II champ Horizon, Desert Mountain and Saguaro finished 2-2 and defending 5A-I champ Desert Ridge was 1-3.

Placement games for Saturday at noon for the remaining teams will be known by Tuesday night  (March 1). Those games will be hosted by Chaparral, Boulder Creek, Mountain Pointe and Highland.
