Last year it was Millennium that pulled off a shocker by eliminating tournament favorite Desert Vista in the Division I semifinals. The tables were turned on Tuesday in this year's quarterfinals.

Tatum Brimley scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the second half as the fifth-seeded Thunder defeated No. 4 Millennium, 42-35, at ASU's Wells Fargo Arena. Desert Vista (20-6) faces the Red Mountain-Mesquite winner on Friday at 4:30 in the semifinals at Grand Canyon University. Millennium, which was ice cold after a solid first quarter, closed out the season 23-7.

Neitther team could  find the range from the perimeter so Brimley took the ball to the basket in half court or in transition to net nearly all her points. She made a key steal from Millennium senior standout Raina Perez early in the fourth quarter that kept the Thunder on top for good and made it an uphill climb for Millennium. A 7-0 run in the middle of the third period by Desert Vista proved decisive.

Brimley was 8-of-16 from the field and added six steals. Takara Wade came off he bench and scored six points, four on free throws in the final quarter helping protect and further the Thunder's lead.

"She's a heckuva player and quite good defensively," Desert Vista coach Cheyan Wilson said. "She's very underrated. We started playing more the way we wanted to in the second half.

Perez finished with just nine points -- half her season's average and didn't score in the second half until the final five seconds. She was 0-10 from three-point range . The Tigers as a team were 3-of 19 from three-point range. Freshman Dominique Phillips led Millennium with 12 points. After taking a 15-7 lead after one quarter, Millennium made only 10 of 39 shots from the field in the final three quarters.

HAMILTON 45, GILBERT 40: Maya Banks scored 13 of her 16 points in the second half -- 13 in the fourth quarter - to lift the No. 3 Huskies (24-4) past the No. 11 Tigers (19-11). Hamilton moves on to the semis on Friday to face the Valley Vista, a 58-41 winner over Horizon at 2:45 p.m. at Grand Canyon University. Hamilton may have lost second-leading scorer Makayla Filiiere to an injury she sustained early in the first quarter.

The fourth quarter turned out to be a shootout matching Gilbert freshmen Hanna and Haley Cavinder from the perimeter against Banks in the paint. Banks' effort prevailed as she made 5 of 6 shots from five feet in. Haley Cavinder led Glbert with 18 points and Hanna Cavinder finished with 10.

Gilbert enjoyed its best quarter in the second, outscoring Hamilton, 12-7 to take a 20-16 lead at the half. The Tigers led the see-saw fourth period, 40-38, with 2:14 left. Banks tied it at 40 with two free throws and Hannah White's layup a few seconds later gave Hamilton the lead for good.  Payton Whitmore sank two free throws and Banks one in the final minute to clinch it. Maddie Frederick chipped in 12 points for the Huskies -- six in each half.

VALLEY VISTA 58, HORIZON 41: Senior Cerena Reeves scored a season-high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the No. 2 Monsoon pulled away in the second half to top the No. 10 Huskies. It's Valley Vista's deepest run at state in its brief history. They've bettered their advancement each of the last four seasons.

Reeves and junior post Kiara Edwards led a third-quarter charge that saw Valley Vista (22-6) break open the game. Reeves scored nine points and Edwards six as the Monsoon outscord Horizon 17-7 in the period to open up a 16-point lead. Edwards added 13 rebounds to go with eight points.

Sophomore point guard Taylor Chavez was solid as usual with 17 points -- 10 in the first half. She also had six assists and four steals. Horizon managed to stay close in the opening half despite the absence of a good portion of the second period without leading scorer Leah Goodman (three fouls). Goodman had two points in the first half and just three through three quarters. Goodman and senior post Katie Grant led Horizon (16-13) with 11 points and freshman Allysa Alverez chipped in with 10 points.

MESQUITE 68, RED MOUNTAIN 31: The top-seed Wildcats (24-5) used a late first-quarter run to break out to a 21-9  lead and went on to rout the No. 9 Mountain Lions (16-12) in the final quarterfinal game of the evening at Wells Fargo. It was Mesquite's 15th win in a row.

Sophomore Shaylee Gonzales finished with a game-high 26 points. She led the first-half getaway along with fellow sophomore Lindsey Vanallen. (12 first-half points). Gonzales had 14 points, five steals and four assists in the opening half. Her half was nearly perfect as she made 6 of 7 shots, her only three and was 3 for-3 from the line. Mesquite's pressure forced 14 turnovers in the first half and led to a bunch of layups and 15 of 27 shooting for the Wildcats.  Mesquite led 40-25 at halftime and made sure Red Mountain could not rally with a 16-6 edge in the third period.

Amaya West led Red Mountain with 10 points and senior Seneca Richards closed her career with nine points -- all in the first half.
