SALPOINTE BOYS TIPOFF TOURNAMENT

Nov. 21-26: Salpointe

 

Monday, Nov. 21

 

Sunnyside 69, Ironwood Ridge 54

Sunnyside defeated Ironwood Ridge 69-54 in the opening game of the Salpointe Tipoff Classic on Monday. It was the first win for first-year head coach Jimmy Rosthenhausler.

The Blue Devils built a 15-4 lead heading into the second quarter and the game played even from there with a 27-18 halftime score. Sunnyside went up 48-28 after three but Ironwood Ridge cut into the lead and the Nighthawks were only down 56-48 with 2:36 left in the game thanks to a 3-pointer by Jack Drescher but the Blue Devils went on a 13-6 run to end the game.

Sunnyside senior Mikey Silva led all scorers with 28 points.  Nikc Jackson added 17 more. Ironwood Ridge senior Nick Watson scored 17 and Drescher put in 15.

 

Nogales 55, Cienega 52

Nogales and Cienega played to a 25-25 tie at the half and it stayed pretty even with the Bobcats taking a 41-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Andrew Leonard scored six points down the stretch to give Cienega a 51-47 lead with 3:20 left in the game but the Bobcats were limited to one point the rest of the way and Samuel Leglue hit a jumper with 25.6 seconds left to give the Apaches a 55-52 win.

Nogales was led a by a trio of sophomores: Luis Martinez scored 14, David Villa scored 12 and Fabian Maldonado had eight. Andrew Leonard scored 20 points to lead Cienega and Cameron Dillard and Breven Burnett scored eight each.

 

Salpointe 63, Cholla 50

The Lancers took a 29-17 lead at the half thanks to a 3-pointer from senior guard Cameron Miller at the buzzer. Miller hit another long-range shot to give Salpointe a 36-19 lead with 5:49 left in the third but that lead was dwindled down to 44-33 heading into the fourth.

Senior Darrick Ragland hit a couple of free throws to cut the Lancer lead down to 48-42 with 5:17 left in the game but that was as close at the Chargers would get. Majok Deng scored five points down the stretch including a massive dunk to help lead the Lancers to a 63-50 win.

Isaac Cruz and Deng led Salpointe with 17 points each and Miller added 14. Marcel Dean scored 14 to lead Cholla and Kaylon Tippins Hill scored 10. Ragland scored eight points as did Jevon Jones and Jordan Porter

 

Catalina Foothills 66, Rincon/UHS 54

Both teams played close with small leads in the game and the game worked out to a 40-40 tie with 3:12 left in the third. The Falcons broke away and outscored the Rangers 11-3 to take a 51-43 lead after three.

The game got close again and Catalina Foothills led 58-54 with 1:11 left but Rincon stalled from there and Catalina Foothills went on to win the game 66-54.

Jared Irwin scored 19 points to lead Catalina Foothills and Spencer Lewis added 12.  Estevan Sandoval had 15 for Rincon/UHS, Jon Mueller had 11 and Joey Cable scored eight.

 

Tuesday, Nov. 22

Cholla vs. Sunnyside, 3:309 p.m.

Nogales vs. Rincon/UHS, 5 p.m.

Catalina Foothills vs. Cienega, 6:30 p.m.

Salpointe vs. Ironwood Ridge, 8 p.m.
