Division I: Oct. 30-31

The Division I state golf championships got underway on Monday at the OMNI Tucson National.  Xavier leads by four strokes on the girl’s side with a 4-over-par 288 on the Sonoran Course. Pinnacle (292) is in second place after the first round and Hamilton (299) is in third.

Xavier standout Ashley Menne is leading a very close field by one stroke. Menne shot a 2-under 69 and Michelle Nguyen of O’Connor finished 1-under. The next five golfers are either even or 1-over. Only a sophomore, Menne finished in a three-way tie for the state championship last year with her former teammate Elizabeth Caldarelli and former Hamilton standout Hannah Li.

The Division I state tournament was called after one round last year due to weather conditions. The Gators won their sixth title in a row and 34th overall and Caldarelli is now a freshman at Texas A&M.

Menne will tee off on the first hole at 11:51 a.m. on the Catalina Course and Nguyen will follow at noon.

Brophy shot a 4-over 296 as a team to take a two-stroke lead over Chaparral on the Catalina Course. Pinnacle is in third place (299).

There is a three-way tie on the boy’s side with Queen Creek standout Gabriel Salvanera, Chaparral standout Mason Domecq and Brophy Prep standout Tony Hendricks all coming in with 2-under 71. The next three golfers are only one shot back and the next three after that are all even.

The boys will switch over to the Sonoran Course on Tuesday with Salvanera scheduled to tee off on the 11th hole at 11:06 a.m. Domecq will tee off from the first hole at 11:42 a.m. and Hendricks will follow at 11:51 a.m.
