Cardinals come thru for Sollenberger Classic

June 24, 2011 by Kevin Ray, AZPreps365

We knew the date we just didn't know where the game was going to be played. That was the scenario that was playing out for the AIA  and  the 6th Annual Sollenberger Classic.  After the AIA was thrown an unexpected curve by Northern Arizona University a couple weeks ago when the university  informed them that the Skydome would not be available for the Sollenberger Classic the AIA was left scrambling to find a facility at the last minute.

Today the AIA and the Arizona Cardinals reached an agreement that will put the season kick off at the University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals have been big supporters of the AIA and high school football since the doors opened and this is another sign of their connection to the high school community. The game will be held on Saturday, August 20th.

Fans are in for a real treat this year because for the first time in the games history there will be 2 games played. The teams include some of the states best and in the eyes of some the nations best. Arizona will be represented by defending 3A & 5A-II Champs, Show Low & Chaparral.  These two talented programs will be matched up against 2 strong teams from Nevada with Moapa Valley & Bishop Gorman set to make the trip to the desert to get the season kicked off.  Chaprral has claimed the last 2 state championships in their division and Bishop Gorman has captured the last 2 Nevada big school titles and is considered by many to be one of the top teams in the country.

With 2 games on tap kick times have not been set as of this time.  The games will be broadcast live on AIA365.com.  More details will be coming out in the coming weeks.
