Power failure pulls plug on hoops; teams try again Friday

June 30, 2011 by Don Ketchum, AZPreps365

Boys’ basketball teams had their engines all revved up to play in Thursday’s (June 30) opening round of the Best In Basketball Summer Invitational at Mesa Red Mountain High, but the games were canceled due to a power failure caused by an explosion and fire at a transformer about a mile away.

Power also was out at many traffic signals in the area.

Tournament organizers attempted to move Thursday’s games to Tempe McClintock, but logistics could not be worked out.

As of late Thursday afternoon, coaches were told that power was expected to be restored in time for Friday’s (July 1) games, which begin at 9 a.m. Games are due to be played throughout the day, as well as on Saturday (July 2).

Check with your head coach/administrator to verify the game times and location.

Participating teams are:

Laveen Betty H. Fairfax, Anthem Boulder Creek, Phoenix Brophy Prep, Sierra Vista Buena, Laveen Cesar Chavez, Chandler, Tempe Corona del Sol, Mesa Desert Ridge, Phoenix Desert Vista, Chandler Hamilton, Gilbert Highland, Phoenix Horizon, Kingman, Tempe Marcos de Niza, Tempe McClintock, Mesilla Valley Christian, Phoenix Mountain Pointe, Mesa Red Mountain, Phoenix Shadow Mountain, Phoenix Sunnyslope, Tempe, Thatcher and Willcox.
