PRESCOTT VALLEY — Gabriel Ricketts ran for two touchdowns, quarterback Bruce Normandin scored twice and No. 15 Bradshaw Mountain bounced back from an ugly loss at Coconino a week ago to beat Mingus 34-7 on Friday night.

It was the fourth win in five games for the Bears (5-2, 1-1 4A Grand Canyon), which took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

For Bradshaw Mountain head coach Bob Young, it was his 201st career victory, earning No. 200 against Apache Junction in a 41-28 win Sept. 22.

“Hats off to coach Young on his 201st win,” said Marauders head coach Dave Moncibaez, who played for Young in the late 1990s at Mingus.

Many of those 200 wins came at the helm of Mingus, a program he led to a state title in 1997, and a runner-up trophy in 2008 when the Marauders were 13-0 before losing to Notre Dame Prep. 49-32 in the 4A championship game.

“We were happy that we weren’t his 200th, based off the history there,” Moncibaez said with a big smile. “So, hats off to him, he had his guys prepared.”

Normandin put the Bears on the board with a 1-yard quarterback sneak play with 9:51 to play in the first quarter, then Ricketts found the endzone for the first time on a 2-yard run.

Up 14-0, Jordan Kelly sprinted across the goal line for a 3-yard score in the second quarter, and Normandin found a wide-open Brayden Munday running a 35-yard flag rout to put the Bears up 28-0 with 34 seconds left in the first half.

Kobe De La Haye finally gave No. 19-ranked Mingus a bright spot offensively in the second half with a 13-yard touchdown run, but Ricketts added his second touchdown of the night with 8:02 to play in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.

“We went back to the drawing board as far as taking care of the little things. Last week we got away from our M.O. of being physical, and Coconino took it to us. We took that personal,” Young said. “We had a great week of practice, they worked hard and focused on the little fundamentals that helped us out tonight.”

Missing the services of standout running back Michael Grijalva for most of the game due to injury, Mingus struggled to get their running game going against a stout Bears defensive front.

Grijalva had 67 carries for 561 yards and six touchdowns entering Friday night’s game.

“I feel like Bradshaw kind of gets in our heads a little bit, and I think that’s what happened the first few touchdowns,” Moncibaez said. “Then we made some adjustments and had some opportunities to capitalize on them, get back in the game, and we never really did.”

REGION SHAKEUP?

With Lee Williams defeating Coconino in overtime Friday night, 20-14, and Prescott beating Flagstaff 53-20, the Volunteers (6-1, 2-0 4A Grand Canyon) sit atop the region, while Mingus, Coconino, Prescott and Bradshaw Mountain are all tied at 1-1.

Young said the Grand Canyon region is definitely up for grabs this year.

“Coconino took it to us last week. Lee Williams is tough. And don’t sleep on Prescott, Cody (Collett) always does a great job,” Young said. “Who knows, it could go down to that last week.”

Moncibaez said anything could happen in the coming weeks within region play.

“We have to stay positive, cross our fingers. The hope is we keep building and growing the program. If we don’t make the playoffs, we don’t make the playoffs. But the positive is we are getting better and being more competitive. We have a tough region, tougher in the past,” Moncibaez said.
