Quarterfinalists set in state badminton tournament

State badminton tournaments head to the finish this week with team title chases in 5A and 4A begining Monday and individual championships concluding Saturday with the quarterfinals, semis and championship matches.

The individual championships began over the weekend at Independence High School and the fields in singles and doubles were whittled down to eight  in each.

Singles quarterfinals are set to begin Saturday at 1:30 p.m., semis at 3 and finals at 4:30 at Independence High. The matchups have top seed Cate Welch (Xavier) going against Bri Calderon (Hamilton); Jasmine Fuller (Sunnyslope) vs. Genesis Ramirez (Greenway); Steph Vermillion (Millennium) vs. Ashley Goldberg (Desert Vista) and Jessica Michele (Xavier) vs. Kelly Kulp (Mesa Mountain View).

Quarterfinals in doubles begins at 1 p.m., semis at 2:30 and finals at 4 at Independence. Those matchups have No. 1 seed Stacey McGuire and Ashleigh Foltz (Chaparral) taking on Jordan Hammel and Je Zhe Newton (Chandler); Callie Branyan and Brianna Layser (Gilbert) vs. Renata Arronte-Alisa Turkina (Sunnyslope); Alex Hoffmann and Courtney Foltz (Chaparral) vs. Sabrina Martinez-Geneva Heinkel (Mountain Pointe) and Chandler Begay and Wit Wattananimitigul (Chandler) vs. Nicole Schwalbe and Rachel Gur-Arie (Corona del Sol).

There is only one state champion this year individually as 5A and 4A have been combined. There will be two team state champions, one in 5A and one in 4A.

The matchups in the 5A team competition all begin Monday at 4 p.m. at the sites of the four highest seeds. They are: No. 16 Desert Ridge vs. No. 1  Xavier and No. 9 Red Mountain vs. No. 8 Horizon,  both at Xavier. Winners of those matchups meet at 5:30. No. 12 Westwood vs. No. 5 Millennium and No. 13 Desert Mountain vs. No 4 Corona del Sol, both at Corona del Sol. Winners of those matches meet at 5:30. No. 14 Hamilton vs. No. 3 Mountain Pointe and No. 11 Desert Vista vs. No.6 Chandler, both at Mountain Pointe. Winners of those matches meet at 5:30. No. 15 Mesa Mountain View vs. No. 2 Chaparral and No. 10 Highland vs. No. 7 Gilbert, both at Chaparral. Winners of those matches meet at 5:30. The semifinal matches and finals shift to Horizon High School on Wednesday at Thursday. Start times both days are 6:30 p.m.

The matchups in the 4A team competition all begin Monday at 4 p.m. at the sites of the two high seeds. They are No. 8 Independence vs. No. 1 Sunnyslope and No. 5 Paradise Valley vs. No. 4 Apollo, both at Sunnyslope. Winners of those matches meet in the semis at 5:30.  No. 6 Prescott vs. No. 3 Shadow Mountain and No. 7 McClintock vs. No. 2 Greenway, both at Greenway. Winners of those matches meet in the semis at 5:30. The championship match is set for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Independence High.
