TUSD BOYS: ISMAEL ARCE MEMORIAL CUP

Mica Mountain beat Rincon/University 1-0 in the first round of the TUSD Ismael Arce Memorial Cup held at both Palo Verde High School and Tucson High this week. Thunderbolt freshman Julian Ordaz scored in the 63rd minute for the deciding goal despite Mica Mountain being outshot 12 to 4 in the contest.

The Rangers had several one-on-one and set-piece chances but the team couldn’t find the back of the net with Landon Hubbard collecting five saves for Mica Mountain and sophomore midfielder Landon McKendrick harassing the Ranger attack all match. McKendrick also came up with an assist on the goal from Ordaz.

Rincon/UHS head coach Roxanne Taylor is looking for her 500th career victory since taking over the position with the Rangers in 1986. Taylor has three state championships to her name (1997, 1998 and 2007) with runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009.

Rincon/UHS (3-6) will face Tanque Verde (4-4) on Thursday at Palo Verde and Mica Mountain (8-3) will play the Hawks on Wednesday.
