MLB draft: 9 players with Arizona prep ties taken on Day 2

It took only 10 picks Friday (June 7) on Day 2 of Major League Baseball's first-year player draft for another player Arizona player with prep ties to the state to be selected. Eight more such players would follow in six hours of selections that covered rounds 3 through 10.

Highlighting the day were a pair of Hamilton High players who graduate just more than a week ago. Right-handed pitcher Patrick Murphy, who missed the 2013 season due to injury, was the 83rd pick overall (third round) by the Toronto Blue Jays. His Husky teammate, first baseman Cody Bellinger, was tabbed in the fourth round (No. 124 overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The only other just-graduated player chosen from the state was Basha shortstop Jamie Westbrook, snapped up in the fifth round (150 overall) by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The rest of the Arizona contingent drafted Friday. all in junior college or four-year schools: Stephen Tarpley, who prepped at Gilbert High and played this season for Scottsdale Community College, went to Baltimore in the third round (98th overall). Tarpley is a left-handed power pitcher likely to be groomed as a starter.

Daniel Slania, a right-handed closer type, was taken by San Francisco in the fifth round (162nd overall). Slania is a Salpointe Catholic grad. Right behind Slania at No. 163 was Texas A&M shortstop Mikey Reynolds. Reynolds was drafted by Atlanta in the fifth round. Reynolds is a Mountain Ridge graduate.

Going in the seventh round to Colorado was University of Arizona right-hander Konner Wade. Wade was 199th pick and played high school ball at Chaparral.

Left-handed pitcher Chris Freudenberg, currently at South Mountain Community College, was an 8th round pick (243rd overall) by the Chicago White Sox. Freudenberg played at McClintock and Saguaro high schools.

Completing the Arizona contingent Friday was ASU outfielder Kasey Coffman. Coffman, who played at Brophy Prep, was chosen in the 10th round (306th overall) by Detroit.

Taken in the first two rounds on Thursday on the Day 1 of the draft were two Arizona prep players and one collegian. DJ Peterson, who plays at New Mexico and prepped at Gilbert High, and his younger brother, Dustin, were selected 12th overall (Seattle) and 50th overall (San Diego), respectively. Desert Ridge shortstop Riley Unroe went to Tampa Bay (60th overall).
