Baseball: Hamilton pitching dominates Desert Vista Invite

Hamilton's baseball team capped a sparkling week of power-ranking game play and closed out the 16th annual Desert Vista Tournament at Desert Vista High School with the six-team tourney's best record.

Hamilton was 2-1 in the first weekend of play at the Desert Vista Invite Feb. 27-28 and added two wins on Saturday (March 7) to finish with a 4-1 record. Next best were Desert Mountain and Desert Vista at 3-2.

Overall Hamilton is 7-1 after two weeks, including shutouts of Williams Field and Pinnacle in games that counted in the power rankings Wednesday (March 4) and Friday (March 6). Coach Mike Woods has seen his pitching staff overwhelm the opposition thus far. The Huskies have allowed 11 runs in seven games -- seven of those runs came in their only loss  (7-4 to Mesa Mountain View on Feb. 28).

The pitchers of note Saturday were Nick Ohanian and Jake Wong. Ohanian scattered four hits and struck out 12 in beating Mesquite, 1-0, for his second win of the young season. He's yet to allow an earned run in 11 innings. Ricky Ramsdell homered in the top of the seventh for the lone run off hard-luck losing pitcher Nick Schoenhardt. Later on Saturday, Jake Wong rebounded from Hamilton's only shaky outing thus far, allowing one run and seven hits over six innings in a 9-2 win over Desert Vista.

While the outings for Ohanian and Wong were superb, senior Zane Pederson (2-0) one-upped them with a no-hitter Friday in a 3-0 victory over Pinnacle. Pederson fanned only two, but pitched to one over the minimum for his second win of the season. Pederson has not allowed a run in 12 innings of work. Pederson also is 15-0 in his varsity career (1-0 as a sophomore), 12-0 last year, including winning the state title game and 2-0 in 2015).  Hamilton got a complete-game, one-hitter on Wednesday from Zane Strand in beating Williams Field, 5-0.

It's hard to imagine a deeper staff in the state as Pederson, Strand and Wong contributed often last year and Ohanian is set to have a big year after missing most of last year.
