Marcos de Niza was challenged for 24 minutes in its section opener against Campo Verde on Friday night, but the last 24 minutes was no contest.

The speedy Padres outscored Campo Verde 28-0 in the second half, using five plays of 35 yards or more to deliver a 42-10 victory over Campo Verde at Vic Sanchez Stadium .

Marcos de Niza (6-1, 1-0) extended its winning streak to six games since an opening night loss to Mountain Pointe and served notice to the rest of its section (Mesquite, Gilbert, Corona del Sol and Poston Butte) that it is the team to beat for D-II Section V.

"This game went a lot like last week," Marcos de Niza coach Sean Morin said. "We struggled, were sluggish the first half on offense. Our defense figured it out the second half, and got a shutout for the second week in a row. (Campo Verde) Coach (Max) Ragsdale always puts up a good game plan. We were able to do some things that worked the second half."

Marcos de Niza didn't waste much time pulling away from its slim 14-10 lead at intermission. The Padres took the second-half kickoff and marched 80 yards in eight plays. A 43-yard completion from quarterback Nazareth Greer to Avery Sanders set Marcos up in the red zone. Greer scored on a 1-yard run for a 21-10 lead at the 9:17 mark.

Perhaps the back-breaking score for Marcos was its next one. Pinned on its 1-yard line after a Campo Verde punt, the Padres ate up 99 yards in four plays. Two completions by Greer to Montre Williams (35 yards and 59 yards) did nearly all the damage. The 59-yard connection was for a TD and 28-10 lead with 5:21 left in the third quarter.

The second 56-yard run of the game by Moss to the Campo Verde 1 set up Richards second TD run with 9:48 left. Marcos de Niza finished the scoring with a 61-yard interception return by defensive back Jesse Guzman with five seconds left.

"We hung with them for a half, but they have so much speed," Ragsdale said. "It's hard to keep up with them because of that."

Greer finished with a very good night through the air. He was 7-for-15 for 87 yards in the first half, but rebounded the final two periods for 155 yards and one TD pass. Moss rushed for 118 yards on six carries. Six different receivers caught passes for the Padres. Campo Verde was limited to 239 yards of offense while Marcos de Niza totaled 494 -- 277 of that in the second half.

Marcos de Niza's slim first-half lead on Campo Verde (2-4, 0-1) 14-10 was courtesy of an opening drive of 88 yards in eight plays capped by Richards first of two touchdowns -- an 18-yard run. The other Padres score in the first half came on a 56-yard run by Moss, the first of two big plays the junior back produced.

Campo Verde managed to stay closs in the first half thanks to 55-yard kickoff return by Dez Odoms that set up a 42-yard field goal by Ethan Wilson in the first quarter. The Coyotes pulled withing 14-10 on their lone sustained drive of the evening -- 75 yards in nine plays. Quarterback Cole Pineda accounted for nearly all the yardage. He completed three passes to Elijah Jones for 57 yards and rushed for 12 yards on the possession. His 6-yard run struck paydirt with 1:56 left in the half.
