D-I girls golf: Xavier wins 1st team title -- with lefty-medalist

Xavier Prep accomplished something it never had before on Tuesday afternoon in winning its 5th consecutive big-school golf crown and 33rd in school history. The Gators had a left-handed golfer claim medalist honors.

Alisa Snyder's consistency over 36 holes was the key as she finished 7-under par for the tournament to best runner-up Kelly Su of Chaparral by two strokes at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen.

'"I know that's a first for us," Xavier's longtime coach and athletic director Sister Lynn Winsor said of Snyder . "Alisa really wanted this. She's a senior, and it was her last chance to win it. She played very well."

Snyder, who will be off to the University of Michigan next fall, shot a 3-under 69 on Tuesday. Combined with her 4-under 68 on Monday she totaled 137 for the two days. Her round Monday was five birdies and one bogey. Tuesday's round was four birdies and one bogey. The bogey came on the final hole. She parred every hole on the front 9 Tuesday and saved her four birdies for the back to fend off Chaparral sophomore Kelly Su. Su turned in the best round Tuesday -- a 4-under 68. Su shot 71-68 for 139. It was the second successive runner-up finish for Su.

"My short game was really good both days," Snyder said. "If I was in trouble, my short game got me out of it nicely."

Snyder, who entered the final round tied with teammate Emily Mahar, trailed only once briefly in the round. Mahar's topsy-turvy round which contained six bogeys and five birdies, led by a shot after the 6th hole with her third birdie of the day. The erratic, 1-over round by Mahar couldn't keep pace with Snyder. Snyder had pressure put on late by Su, who finished her round a few holes prior to Snyder. Su was in the clubouse at 5-under and Snyder was at -7 with three holes left after a birdie at 15.

Just as Snyder and her group were set to tee off on 17, they were stopped due to a lightning delay. Snyder, Millennium's Emily Smith and Salpointe's Haylin Harris had to wait 10 minutes until the lightning warning was lifted. That caused a little extra anxiety for Snyder, but she tallied her final birdie on 17 -- using a nice chip to set up a 10-foot put that booste her lead to three heaading to 18.

A bogey-free final round went by the wayside on 18 for Snyder, but she had plenty of cushion for the win. In three state tournaments (sophomore through senior years) Snyder finished 11th, third and champ, respectively.

Xavier claimed the team title by 45 strokes with a 4-over par total (580). Millennium brought home its first golf trophy, a runner-up finish at 625. Salpointe (632) was third, Chaparral (650) was fourth and Hamilton (661) was fifth.

Finishing in the top 10-- behind Snyder and Su -- were Xavier's Mahar 3-under (141), who placed in a tie for fourth last year; Millennium's Smith 1-under (143); Harris 1-over (145); Millennium;s Gialia Scotton 3-over (147); Hamilton's Rachel Fujitani and Xavier's Mikayla Fitzpatrick at 5-over (149); Sandra Day O'Connor's Michell Nguyen 6-over (150) and Pinnacle's Sara Padilla 8-over (152).
