Pinnacle girls basketball is resilient. The Pioneers want that moniker to read champions.

Sophomore guard Sydney Wiese played like a champion with an amazing 35-point effort Wednesday night helping No. 2 seed Pinnacle edge 10th-seed Horizon, 65-61, in a 5A-II girls basketball semifinal at Jobing.com Arena.

The victory allows the Pioneers (24-7) to play for a basketball title for  the fifth straight year -- one in 4A-I and the fourth consecutive time in 5A-II. Pinnacle faces Tolleson for the third straight season in Friday's 5A-II title game at 12:30 p.m. at Jobing.com Arena. Tolleson defeated Westview, 62-37, earlier Wednesday to advance.

Wiese's game was dazzling. She connected on seven 3s -- two in the first half and five in the second half. The two 3's in the first half helped rally Pinnacle from an11-8 deficit. Wiese also made all 10 of her free-throw attempts, including 8 in the final period keeping Pinnacle in front of pesky Desert Valley Region rival Horizon.

Wiese scored 19 of Pinnacle's 24 points in the fourth quarter. She scored seven of Pinnacle's last eight points and protected two-point leads three times with a 3 and twice with two free throws. The last two with six seconds left sealed the outcome. Aley Rohde added 10 points and Emily Wahlberg chipped in nine points off the bench.

Horizon (19-11) lost to Pinnacle twice during the regular season. Both were by double-digit margins. But with senior guard Paige Picciotti and junior forward Madison Austin going on the offenisve, particularly in the final period, Horizon managed to slice a 13-point third-quarter deficit to two late in the game. Picciotti scored a team-high 23 points, including 10 point in the fourth period and 5 3s for the game. Austin finished with 21 points -- 11 in the fourth period and a trio of 3s.
