Four state champions emerging from one tournament? Could happen.

The 3rd annual Lady X girls basketball tournament set for Friday June 10 and Saturday June 11 at Red Mountain High School features eight high-flying programs.  The tournament, sponsored by Monarch Sports, has lined up two state champs from last year (Hamilton-D-I and Seton D-II), two runners-up (Mesquite D-I and Valley Christian D-III), two semifinalists (Valley Vista D-I and Sierra Linda D-II and Gilbert and Red Mountain (D-I quarterfinalists). Each school sports a strong corps of returning players. Most will be available for the two-day event.

Competition Friday begins at 5 and 6 p.m. with a non-bracket game for each team. The 5 p.m. games are Seton vs. Valley Christian and Mesquite vs. Red Mountain. The 6 p.m. games match Hamilton and Valley Vista and Sierra Linda and Gilbert.

Bracket games on Friday are at 7 and 8. The 7 p.m. games are #1 Seton vs. #8 Red Mountain and #3 Mesquite vs. #6 Valley Christian. The 8 p.m. games are #4 Valley Vista vs. #5 Sierra Linda and #2 Hamilton vs. #7 Gilbert. Loser's bracket semis are Saturday at 10 a.m. and winner's bracket games at 11 a.m. Consolation games are at noon with the championship and third-place games at 1 p.m.

Here's a brief look at the teams:

Hamilton heads a contingent of four 6A schools in the tourney -- Valley Vista, Gilbert and Red Mountain are the others. Coach Trevor Neider has a block of players back with substanstial time as starters and occasionally bench players. They are juniors Maddie Frederick and Hannah White and seniors Maya Banks, Courtney Colleary and Cardi Harris. Frederick won't be there tending to another commitment and White is recovering from ACL surgery.

Seton Catholic returns all five starters and is situated in 4A for the coming season. Noone else in the tournament will be competing in 4A, but Seton can hang with any team in the state. Seton's returning starters are seniors Jenn and LeeAnne Wirth and Liz Holter and juniors Sarah Barcello and Kendall Krick. Jenn Wirth is questionable recovering from a concussion. Barcello is questionable with a foot injury.

Valley Vista has a a trio of leaders back and offer one of the better challenges to unseat Hamlton. Junior guard Taylor Chavez is one of the state's best as is senior forward Kiara Edwards. Junior Clarissa Rodarte had a strong sophomore season.

Gilbert made a strong push forward last year and is led by sophomore twin guards Hanna and Haley Cavinder. Older sister Brandi Cavinder, Shayla Huskey and Stacy Hock logged enough time to get their feet wet. Two returners are sidelined via injury --Tiffany Hurd and Tessa Kowalski.

Red Mountain's corps returnees are sophomores Jacquelyn Ries, Samantha Shoemake, and Symone Humphrey and junior Amaya West. All  averaged between six and nine points a game last year.

Two teams certainly among the top five in the coming season in 5A are Mesquite and Sierra Linda. Mesquite is led by juniors Shaylee Gonzales and Lindsey Vanallen. Both have scored more than 1,000 points in two varsity seasons. Vanallen has been recovering from ankle surgery, but may be released to play some this weekend. Juniors Lonnae Johnson and Natalie Weber return and the addition of Utah transfer Lauren Gustin gives the Wildcats a much-needed inside presence.

Sierra Linda is excited to get the chance to compete in the tournament for the first time. The Bulldogs have marquee players in senior Jenay Bourquez and junior Jenae Gonzales. Senior Cheyenne Lee brings experience as well, but may not be available for the tournament.

Rounding out the field is Valley Christian. The Trojans are seated in 3A for the 2016-2017 season and will have competition for sure from reservation schools if not a couple more. Valley Christian lost  one starter to graduation, but a half-dozen returning players with ample playing time make it a team to watch. Megan Timmer, Angie Andreas, Hailey Russell, Bethany Wolph and Sabriya Smith represent a strong senior class. Junior point guard Anna Gorman is the floor leader. Timmer and Gorman were the most consistent players last year. Wolph has battled a series of injuries the past two seasons after a huge freshman season. She is a career double-figure scorer when healthy.
