Football Walk Through: Week 9 of 11

October 11, 2016 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

It's a week of rest for eight of 36 East Valley football teams, good timing for many of them. Most are going to be playoff bound and allows them to recharge for regular season finish and postseason. Six of the eight (Chandler, Skyline, Williams Field, Queen Creek, Campo Verde and American Leadership) are likely headed to postseason in their respective conferences.

Focus this week is on the effect of outcomes as they pertain to power-rankings with a couple weeks left. Some movement from last week - some expected, some surprises.  Here we go, schedule first:

WEEK 9 of 11 EAST VALLEY GAMES

FRIDAY OCT. 14: 6A -- Hamilton (5-2) at Basha (3-5); Mountain Pointe (7-0) at Desert Ridge (6-1); HIghland (2-5) at Desert Vista (3-4); Corona del Sol (3-4) at Gilbert (1-6); Red Mountain (4-3) at Mesa (3-5); Dobson (5-2) at Mtn. View (4-3); Brophy Prep (7-1) at Perry (6-1). 5A -- McClintock (3-4) at Ironwood (1-6); Poston Butte (3-4) at Marana (5-2); Mesquite (5-2) at Vista Grande (2-5). 4A -- Cortez (2-6) at Apache Junction (2-5); Higley (6-1) at Cactus (4-3); Coronado (3-4) at Combs (1-6); Marcos de Niza (5-2) at Seton Catholic (4-3); Casa Grande (4-3) at Tempe (4-4). 3A -- Casteel (6-1) at ASU Prep (1-5); Fountain Hills (2-5) at Valley Christian (2-5). 2A -- Scottsdale Christian (7-1) at Gilbert Christian (4-4); Chandler Prep (6-2) at San Tan Foothills (4-2); Arizona Lutheran (2-5) at Tempe Prep (5-2). BYES -- Skyline (7-1), Chandler (6-2), Westwood (2-6), Williams Field (8-0), Queen Creek (7-1), Campo Verde (6-2),  American Leadership (7-1), Benjamin Franklin (6-2).

THIS AND THAT: Finishing in the top 16 of a conference nets a playoff berth with one caveat. If you are on the edge at say 15 or 16, you get bumped by a team below you if they win their region and earn athe automatic berth that comes with it and your team does not. At present a team headed for a region title, but not in the top 16 in 6A is Cesar Chavez. The Champions figure to win the Metro Region so if they remain below 16 they will bump someone. East Valley teams hovering on the bubble this week are Desert Vista (14) and Dobson (16). Cesar Chavez won last week, but dropped a spot 21 to 22. Pinnacle, currently battling Horizon for region honors in the Desert Valley, jumped from 22 to 15 this week. The Pioneers (3-5) loaded, non-region schedule is helping them immensely. The team making the largest leap is Basha (30 to 20). A win over unbeaten Brophy Prep last week was a shot in the arm for the 3-5 Bears.  The other big moves among 6A teams in the power rankings was Chandler and Perry flip-flopping spots. Chandler is now No. 3 and Perry No. 7.......Queen Creek and Williams Field switched spots in 5A rankings with Queen Creek now at No. 3 and Williams Field at No. 4. Strength of schedule giving Queen Creek the edge. They meet the final week fo the regular season to settle the region title and who finishes higher in the power-rankings. Mesquite remained at No. 8 despite losing while Campo Verde dropped three spots (10 to 13) with a loss. Marana Mountain View rose four spots and into the top 10 at No. 9.....Higley and Marcos de Niza remained unchanged in the 4A rankings at 4 and 5, respectively. Seton Catholic and Tempe played last week and Tempe's victory pulled it closer to the top 16 and nearly even with Seton. Seton dropped from 18 to 21; Tempe climbed from 29 to 22......American Leadership remained at No. 3 in 3A topping 2A Joy Christian. Florence   went from 8 to 7, Casteel 11 to 9 and Safford from 18 to 13. Suffering large drops were Benjamin Franklin 9 to 15 and Wickenburg 6 to 12. Perennial contenders Yuma Catholic and Northwest Christian jumped -- YC (14 to 10) and NWC (15 to 11).......East Valley schools in 2A were a mixed bag in the rankings -- two went up and two dropped. Chandler Prep's loss saw the Titans plummet from 12 to 18. Tempe Prep's loss to Phoenix Christian hurt slightly -- a drop from 5 to 7. Moving up were San Tan Foothills 18 to 16 nd Gilbert Christian 16 to 14. Alchesay and Many Farms are battling for the 2A North title and both are below 16  (17 and 21). Chandler Prep and San Tan Foothills are the leaders for region honors in the 2A MEtro East.
