Chandler punches ticket to 6A semifinals

November 10, 2016 by Jeff Sullivan, Arizona State University

The No. 2 Chandler Wolves stomped the No. 10 Desert Vista Thunder Thursday night 62-7 in the 6A Conference quartefinals.

Chandler expected a much bigger challenge in the quartefinals after beating Basha 48-6 in the first round.

That challenge never came.

In fact, Chandler was up 14-0 before the Thunder offense even saw the field.

Head coach Shaun Aguano said it's hard to lose when you get big scores so early in the game.

"When things like that happen it's going to be a very good night," Aguano said. "We scored on special teams. We scored on defense, anyway possible. I'm just happy with our kids, especially in a short week."

Sophomore quarterback Jacob Conover spread the ball around with ease, finding Gunner Romney and Jarick Caldwell for touchdowns in the first half.

With a comfortable cushion, Aguano took out TJ Green (shoulder) and Johnson to provide a little extra rest.

“When it was 21-0 I said I think we could handle it with our other running backs,” Aguano said. “We have a stable, so I just kept them out. That was my choice.”

An explosive offense can sometimes make a defense jealous.

The Chandler defense made it a point to make big stops and get off the field.

Senior linebacker Patrick Henley likes where the defense it at.

“Everybody has come together and the defense tries to match what the offense does,” Henley said. “It’s been a good couple of weeks.”

Chandler moves on to face No. 3 Perry at Hamilton next Friday. Their previous meeting resulted in a 44-35 Chandler victory and Premier Region title.
