Basha girls soccer team is in the midst of a heavy, front-loaded schedule so Monday afternoon it was all hands on deck in their first match of A Division group play at the annual Coyote Classic at Campo Verde High School.

An early second-half goal and some nice goal-tending in the second half netted Basha a 1-1 tie with host Campo Verde. It was the first match of group play for both team in the tournament, which opened Saturday and continues every day this week through Saturday at Campo Verde and Williams Field high schools.

Basha (7-0-1) played its eighth match seven days on Monday. The Bears played and won two power-ranking matches last week and shoe-horned in five more in winning Desert Ridge's Invitational last Thursday through Satuday. With one of his varsity keepers injured and another ill, coach Greg Johnson used junior varsity call-up Allesandra Morfin to mind the net.

"We voted her the MVP of the game," Johnson said. "She played well for us. Today we were trying to limit minutes since we've played so much. Mentally I don't know if we're all there. I'm already goofy myself, and I should know better after doing this for 17 years."

Basha trailed 1-0 at the half. Campo Verde tallied in the 26th minute. Junior O'Reilly Kreipke launched a free kick from 45 yards out  that forward Whitley Johns managed to head toward the goal. Alexis Pencek was able to tap it in.

That lead lasted until four minutes into the second half. Basha forward-midfielder Valentina Bernal used  her quickness to get around the defense near the right corner. She centered a pass on the mark to freshman forward Jessenya Bogle who knocked it home from about 15 yards out.

Midway through the second half, Campo Verde had a flurry of chances (three) about a minute apart. Morfin deflected the first and was able to smother the second off a rebound. She nabbed a shot right at her from 20 yards out to keep the match even.

Campo Verde (1-2-1) suffered two tough power-ranking losses last week by scores of 2-1, the second in overtime. getting everyone in Monday's match was one objective for coach Drew Guarneri, who is busy coaching the boys and girls varsity this season.

"I got to play everybody," Guarneri said. "We have to be better when we have the ball. Do better on runs when we get them. We have lots of young players so I think that will get better as we go along.
