Perry's girls used a shootout to top Desert Vista while host Campo Verde's boys put up three picturesque goals on Saturday to handle South Mountain and win Division A titles at the annual Coyote Classic Soccer Invite. The 46-team tournament (boys and girls) was hosted by Campo Verde (Division A) and Williams Field (Division B) high schools for the past week.

Perry (7-1 overall) and Desert Vista (5-0-1) played to a 0-0 tie after regulation and two overtime periods leading to the shootout. Perry came out on top 4-3 in PKs. Perry goalkeeper Makayla Aman, who was busy during regulation and overtime repelling a number of Desert Vista shots, made the decisive save.

The teams each made their first three PKs. Desert Vista missed its fourth and Perry's Kiara Parker converted the Pumas' fourth. Aman then dove to her right to deny Desert Vista's fifth attempt by Lauren Schooler to give Perry the title. Perry's Amanda Dahl, Brenna Alderson and Logan VanDine converted the Pumas' other PKs.

Had the match been decided like a prize fight, Desert Vista likely would have been declared the winner due to more shots on goal and possession. But Perry overcame a blitzkreig in the match's first 10 minutes then gradually less over the rest of the contest.

"Desert Vista is a very tough team," Perry coach John Roberts said. "They are the best possession team in Arizona. We got past the first few minutes and stayed with our game plan. We took our chances when we had them, but there weren't many. We stuck by our motto. All we want is all you've got."

Desert Vista coach Marvin Hypolite wasn't unhappy with the final outcome, knowing how well the defending big-school champs performed in this game as well as the four others the Thunder played in the tournament. Desert Vista did not allow a goal in its five matches.

"Not disappointed whatsoever," Hypolite said. "We played lights out. I was very impressed with their keeper, having been one myself. Great hands. Clean hands....

"There are games you dominate and walk off with a loss. This could be a good, quick lesson of how easily winning can slip away. The effort and execution was there."

In the boys final, which matched the only two 5A teams competing in the Division A portion of the tournament, Campo Verde (8-0 and 5-0 in the tournament) got goals from Colton Shafer, Ethan Wilson and Blaise Hall to upend South Mountain, last year's D-II state champs -- 3-0. Shafer scored the first goal in th 16th minute on a flashy give-and-go from Wilson.

Campo Verde improved its lead to 2-0 at half by tallying in the 38th minute. Brandon Martinez made a nifty move and dribbled around his defender just left of the goal and fed Wilson for the finish. The Coyotes final goal came in the 53rd minute. Johnny Halter with little room parallel to the goal fed a hard-charging Hale giving South's keeper no chance at a save.

This was the third year in a row Campo Verde has made it to the final of its tournament and the first time it's won.

"This was a team effort," Campo Verde coach Drew Guarneri said. "Exciting to see moments when we jell like tonight. We have pace and that's a nice weapon. We still have a lot of improvement to make. 5A is not going to be easy."

Campo Verde reached the final by beating Perry, 1-0, with an Ethan Wilson goal off an assist by Colton Shafer the difference. South advanced to the championship by avenging an earlier 3-1 loss to Gilbert with its own 3-1 win. South trailed 1-0, but rallied to win with goals from Arturo Ocha, Bryan Aceves and Eriberto Melchor.

The Division B half of the tournament was contested at Williams Field High. North Canyon's boys came through as champions with a 6-0 record, capped by its 2-1win over Mountain Pointe in the title match. Queen Creek's girls dominated action posting a 5-0 record, culminating with a 3-2 victory over Higley. Queen Creek outscored its opponents 33-4 in its title run..
