BASEBALL: Southern Arizona 4A-6A Futures All-Star Game

The 3rd Annual Garb Athletics/OC Sports Southern Arizona High School All-Star Baseball Game series presented by the Kino Baseball League continued Thursday night at Catalina Foothills High School with Team Copper pulling ahead early to win the 4A-6A Futures Game 12-3.

Fort-three players from Marana, Palo Verde, Canyon del Oro, Cholla, Mountain View, Cienega, Catalina Foothills, Walden Grove, Rincon/UHS, Amphitheater, Nogales, Tucson, Rio Rico, Flowing Wells, Ironwood Ridge, Sunnyside, Salpointe, Pueblo, Douglas, Sahuaro, Desert View, Buena and Vista Grande were selected by the coaches of Southern Arizona.

Simon Boggie (Flowing Wells) got the start for Team Copper and George Arias (Tucson) got the ball for Team Teal.  Team Teal scored one run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Ivan Gallego (Desert View) hit an infield single and Kevin Jimenez (Nogales) doubled him in for the score.

Copper came back in a big way and scored eight runs in the top of the second. Tyler Porter (Canyon del Oro) hit a triple and then Andres Holguin (Flowing Wells) brought him in on an infield single. Andre Greene (Rio Rico) followed with a double and Eli Simental (Pueblo) reached. Boggie picked up an RBI and then Jordan Elliott (Cienega) singled in another run.

Efrain Cervantes (Salpointe) was hit-by-pitch and then Juan Pablo Ruedaflores (Flowing Wells) brought in another run. Porter came up with another RBI to round out the scoring.

Cooper added a run in the top of the fourth on a double from Darrell Joe (Amphitheater) and an RBI from Marco Ozuna (Vista Grande). Copper scored again in the top of the sixth on an RBI from Aaron Gardner (Rincon/UHS) to make it 10-1 and then scored two more in the top of the seventh to make the score 12-1.

Meanwhile, Boggie, Alberto Vasquez (Douglas), Ruedaflores, Greene and Gabriel Rosthenhausler (Sunnyside) combined to shut down 13 batters in a row to keep Teal off the bases. Daniel Durazo (Salpointe) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh to break the streak and Roberto Morales (Mountain View) picked un an RBI later in the inning to make it 12-2.

Peyton Maxwell (Buena) was walked in the bottom of the eighth and Kiko Romero (Canyon del Oro) sacrificed him home to end the scoring and Copper won 12-3.

Simental, Marco Ozuna (Vista Grande) and Porter also pitched for Copper. Besides Arias, Durazo, Maxwell, Travis Cole (Sahuaro), Aaron Hernandez (Palo Verde), Adalberto Leon (Amphitheater), Cole Altherr (Catalina Foothills) and Alec Acevedo (Nogales) also saw pitching action for Teal.

Elliott went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Greene went 2-2 with a double and Boggie went 2-2. Boggie had four strikeouts and Vasquez picked up three strikeouts in a row.
