BASEBALL: Southern Arizona 1A-3A Futures All-Star Game

The 3rd Annual Garb Athletics/OC Sports Southern Arizona High School All-Star Baseball Game series presented by the Kino Baseball League concluded Friday night at Catalina Foothills High School with Team Copper holding on for a 7-6 win over Team Teal in the 1A-3A Futures Game.

30 players from Benson, Catalina, Pusch Ridge, Sa Manuel, Santa Rita, St. Augustine, Empire, Thatcher, Sahuarita, Sabino, Willcox, Bisbee, San Miguel, Coolidge and Tanque Verde were selected by the coaches of Southern Arizona.

Sherrick Sanborn (Willcox) got the start for Team Copper and Robert Summerville (Pusch Ridge) got the start for Team Teal. Copper went out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Aaron Folsom (Catalina) was walked and Jonah Lauten (Catalina) delivered on an RBI single.

Tyler Wiltshire (Sabino) hit a three-run shot in the bottom of the second to help pace Team Teal to a 4-1 lead. Evan Weidenkeller (Pusch Ridge) reached on an error and then Sergio Santa Cruz (San Miguel) was walked. Joaquin Haro (Benson) hit into a fielder’s choice and then Summerville brought in Santa Cruz to tie the game 1-1.

Wiltshire came up with two outs and blasted his shot to left for the 4-1 lead.

Copper scored a run in the top of the fourth on an infield hit by Folsom and Lauten brought him in to make it 4-2. Copper scored three more in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.

Levi Anderson (Coolidge) was walked with one out and Alejandro Camacho (San Manuel) was walked with two outs to put two on. Jack McDonald (Catalina) singled to load the bases and Anderson came home on a wild pitch and Camacho followed close behind on an error on the play to make it 4-4.

Sanborn was walked and then Folsom knocked in McDonald for the lead.

Teal got all three runs back in the bottom half of the fifth on a single by Damon Moore (St. Augustine), a walked issued to Diego Iturrios (Tanque Verde) and an RBI from Gavi Coldiron (Tanque Verde). Michael Romero (Catalina) scored another run and then Wiltshire scored the third run.

Copper scored a run in the top of the sixth on a single from Eddie Alvarez (Bisbee) and an error later in the inning that allowed Alvarez to score. Lauten doubled with one out in the top of the seventh but Iturrios picked up a strikeout and a fly ball to end the game to secure the save. Romero got the win for Team Teal.

Besides Sanborn, Drake Bannerman (Empire) and Alvarez saw pitching action for Copper. Jason Fletcher (Benson) replaced Summerville before giving way to Romero and Iturrios for Teal.

Lauten went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead Team Copper. Folsom went 2-2 and McDonald went 2-3.

Wiltshire went 2-3 with a home run and three RBI for Team Teal. Evan Fallwell (Sabino) went 2-2. Dakota Metzinger (Tanque Verde) and Haro also picked up hits.
