Mountain Pointe cruises in win over Corona del Sol

February 2, 2018 by Matthew Andujo, Arizona State University

The last time Mountain Pointe faced off against Corona del Sol, the Pride squeaked by with a two-point win.

However, Friday night would not be same as the No. 3 team in the state literally stole a 76-48 victory.

Mountain Pointe’s defense was the story recording 12 steals in the blowout.

“It’s not about steals, it’s more about wearing guys down. Steals usually happen because guys get tired,” said coach Duane Eason. “We’ll take the steals, but it’s not what we’re aiming for.”

Point guard Khalid Price controlled the tempo and finished with 12 points and dished out a handful of assists.“We knew it was their senior night, so our goal was to come out and bust them right out the gate and that’s exactly what we did,"said Price. "We pushed the ball up the floor and made significant stops on defense.”

With four minutes remaining in the game, Price drove the lane and threw a monstrous alley-oop to junior forward Jalen Graham to extend the lead to 71-46, delivering the dagger.

Graham finished with 12 points and five blocks.

“[Coach] was getting on me because he said I’m finesse big, he said I need to work harder and be a real big. I just wanted to come out and show him I could be that,” said Graham.

Senior guard Amarion Cash finished with a team-high 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

Mountain Pointe improved to 23-2 and will face Gilbert at home Feb. 6.
