Red Mountain boys edge Westwood

February 7, 2018 by Anthony Ziola, Arizona State University

Westwood rallied late in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to four, but the Red Mountain Mountain Lions outscored Warriors 11-8 in the final minutes for a 69-62 Tuesday night.

Red Mountain coach Chris Lemon gave credit to the Warriors for coming back. “They did not go away, that’s a credit to them, well coached team. They kept fighting and it was obviously was a big night being Senior Night and the atmosphere. Our guys just keep battling and got a couple stops when we needed to.”

Westwood had no answer for senior Timmy Allen who was easily able to get to the basket and get to the free throw line. Allen scored 23 points.

Allen got his team off to a good start scoring eight of Red Mountain’s first 10 points. That led to Red Mountain having a 13-6 lead after the 1st quarter.

Allen explained his success. “I was able to get inside using my size within the offense," he said. "They are obviously a smaller team so I was effective scoring and getting to the line.”

Westwood coach Troy Powell was pleased with his team's effort. “We fought, we did not have any give-up in us and we competed and battled. This game is about competing, and you don’t win them all or lose them all, but we were worried about winning each possession. I taught we honored the process this game and I was very happy about that.”

Westwood's struggles to score in the first quarter continued, forcing Powell to call two timeouts.

In the second quarter Westwood went on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to 23-18 mainly because of Timmy Johnson’s nine points in the quarter. Westwood was not able to cut it any closer because Westwood had committed 10 fouls with 3:30 left in the half. Red Mountain took advantage by making their free throws.

Red Mountain led 27-18 at halftime.

Early on in the third quarter the game seemed to be on the verge of a blowout when Red Mountain went on a 8-2 run increasing their lead to 35-20. Westwood had some small runs but could not make it a two-possession game anytime in the quarter.

Johnson had more than half his team’s points by scoring 10 of the team’s 19 points that quarter.

After the Westwood fourth quarter rally which cut the lead to four, the difference in the game was free throws made by Red Mountain. Allen and Murphy made big shots to put the game out of reach.

Westwood finished the season 6-19 overall without a win in 10 league games. Red Mountain is 18-9 and 8-2 in section play.
