Interregional 4A Football Preview: Deer Valley at Prescott

September 6, 2018 by Chase Williams, Arizona State University

Prescott plays host to the Deer Valley Skyhawks on Friday as they square off in a Class 4A non-region matchup.

Prescott (1-1) is coming off a dominant victory on the road over Moon Valley, 43-0. Deer Valley's last game didn't end in similar fashion, resulting in a 14-point loss to Thunderbird.

Deer Valley (0-2) has struggled late in games to remain conditioned and maintain tempo.

Deer Valley relies on several two-way players, like senior RB/LB Alex McKeon.

"When the offense slowed and starting causing turnovers, the defense became tired after being on the field most of the second half," McKeon said.

Deer Valley coach Dan Friedman is looking to remedy the situation.

"We've been sprinting on and off the field opposed to jogging, as well as extra conditioning at practice, he said. "The kids seem to respond to that. It’s good that we're doing that. hey seem to be enjoying it. We think it will help us play four quarters."

A strength of Prescott's has been its offense, which averages 30 points per game this season. Senior quarterback Austin Clark leads the team in passing and rushing yards.

Prescott will have its hands full due to Deer Valley's star running back Dez Melton, who has averaged more than 200 yards of offense per game this season.

"It honestly feels like there’s more people watching, and it's overwhelming,” Melton said about the pressure of being the such a factor in the offense. “I try to embrace it more than anything."

Deer Valley WR/CB Ja'wan Casteal added: "We have to come out and play harder. We had a good week at practice, and we'll change the way we play."

Kickoff for the game between the Badgers and Skyhawks is 7 p.m. at Prescott High Friday night.
