Goldwater runs away with a victory at Deer Valley

September 21, 2018 by Chase Williams, Arizona State University

The Deer Valley High Skyhawks (0-4) hosted the Barry Goldwater Bulldogs (2-2) Friday night.

The Barry Goldwater Bulldogs ran all over the home Deer Valley Skyhawks, amassing more than 450 yards rushing Friday en route to their first victory against the Skyhawks in 14 years, 34-13.

The Goldwater running backs, Deandre Robinson and Marquise Conley, were the stars of the show Friday, accounting for all five of the Bulldogs touchdowns in the non-conference game.

"It feels amazing," Robinson said. "We did everything for the seniors. They've had it the worst, having not beaten Deer Valley the past four years."

Bulldogs coach Doug Provenzano said: "I try to train these kids. These younger dudes stepped up tonight. We got a lot of heart and fire. It's the mindset we're trying to bring to change the culture of the school."

The Bulldogs led at the half 20-13, following a miscue on fourth down that resulted in good field position for the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks capitalized on the opportunity, needing only one play to put upsix6 points thanks to a 21-yard-touchdown pass from QB Payton Hisey.

Goldwater dominated on the ground in the first half, tallying 236 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns between Robinson and Corley.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Corley broke off a long 87-yard-touchdown run, increasing the lead to 14 with under eight minutes left to play in the fourth.

The Skyhawks looked to drive following the defensive breakdown, but were unable to produce points, chewing the clock down below four minutes left in the game before punting the ball.

The Bulldogs didn't take long to continue their dominant rushing display, exploding on the second offensive play with a 60 yard scamper by Robinson.

Corley capped off the drive with a game sealing 17-yard-touchdown run.

The lone bright spot for the Deer Valley offense was running back Dez Melton, who has been the focal point of the offense the entire season, totaling 182 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

Following an injury that will sideline starter Trent Green for the rest of the season, Deer Valley was forced to play Payton Hisey at quarterback in Friday's matchup against Goldwater.

"We haven't beaten Deer Valley in 14 years," Provenzano said. "It's been a long time. We wanted to break that curse, get that monkey off our back, and it feels good."

The Skyhawks did look better in terms of special teams and penalties, improving on last week's special teams miscues.

"We played a close half, honestly until one of their backs burst off that 87-yard run," Skyhawks coach Dan Friedman said. "The refs came up and complimented our sportsmanship and the way this program has fought. That's a win in my book."

The Skyhawks moved to 0-5 on the season and nextfaces Cactus High School (4-1) on the road. The Bulldogs improved to 3-2 and look to face Millennium High School (3-2) at Millennium.
