Marcos de Niza's girls volleyball team kept its winning ways alive as they notched their sixth straight win Tuesday night against the Arcadia Titans.

The win was a 3-0 sweep, with match scores of 25-11, 25-22 and 25-19. With the victory, the Padres improved to 12-6 on the season and 3-0 in Desert Sky play.

Nearly everything went right for the Padres in the first set, and a big part of the early success the team had was through serving. The Padres collected six aces in the first set and a total of 13 throughout the match.

“As a team, we are really good at serving and we get a lot of our points like that," said senior captain Jenifer Lauer. "I think it really helps us and it gets other teams out of system right off the bat, so when our serves are tough it really benefits everyone.”

Neither team could gather much momentum in the second set, as both teams were seemingly trading off runs. With the second set coming down to the wire, sophomore Hailey White, who led the team in kills with 11, turned out to be the difference-maker.

“When she is on, we are really hard to beat,” Marcos de Niza head coach Melissa Yee said. “We feed off of each other, and when one does well, they all feel it and start to put things together out there.”

Arcadia came out of the gates firing in the third set, as the Titans scored the first five points and later extended their lead to 17-12. From there, the Padres won 13 of the next 15 points to close out the match.

“Marcos is a tough serving team, so we knew we had to be good out of system,” Arcadia head coach Jackie Bunker said. “We weren’t executing the way we wanted to, so we got to stay in system a little bit better in set three.”

After struggling in the beginning stages of the Tournament of Champions and losing five of the first six matches, Marcos de Niza has done nothing but improve.

“Our defense is much better and we are working on staying on the line and staying disciplined against good teams,” Yee said. “From early on in the season, we are much more disciplined now and it shows on the court.”

The Padres will attempt to extend their win streak to seven on Thursday in a road test against the Poston Butte Broncos. Opening serve is set for 6 p.m.
