Basha volleyball coach Terri Spann wasn't keenly aware the Bears had gone a long time without defeating Hamilton a sister school and often a region rival of late.

Spann wasn't fixated with it and perhaps it was better for her and her team as they bounced back from a first-set loss Tuesday night to notch a 3-1 victory over Hamilton at Hamilton in a 6A Premeir Region match. Scores were 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20.

"It doesn't surprise me," Spann said when told Basha had dropped 16 matches in a row to the Huskies dating back to 2011. "I've been trying to change the culture here that we can compete with the Xavier's, Hamilton's and now Perry's. We need to have the belief and confidence when we play against them."

Hamilton, with its youngest team in some time with only one senior starter, entered the match ranked No. 4 in the power-rankings. The Huskies' records are 21-5 overall, 7-3 power-ranking matches and 1-2 region. Basha was at No. 10 and improved to 17-7, 7-3 and 2-2.

The match began with Hamilton having ideas of extending its dominance over Basha. After Basha took a 4-0 lead, the Huskies caught the Bears at 5-5 and never looked back in a six-point win.

Spann decided to adjust her rotation and matchup with Hamilton's outsides the rest of the way and the strategy worked as Basha maintained or controlled the final three sets. Hamilton led by briefly by two and three points in the second and third sets, but Basha avoided the pitfall that has hurt them in big matches.

"We have a tendency to play well and then give up a six- or-seven-point lead just like that," Spann said.

Basha won the second set quite handily, but the third was tight with a one- or two-point lead the last single-point edge at 15-14. Senior outside hitter Chayse Daughtery and junior outside Samantha Drewry combined for 11 kills in the set. Drewry finished with a team-high 16 and Daughtery added 15. Libero Kylra Porch led with 19 digs and junior setter Aspen Aldous piled up 37 assists for the Bears.

Basha threatened to bury Hamilton in the fourth with a 13-5 lead after a block by junior middle Lindsey Otero. One of those mid-set slumps ensued as Hamilton slashed the margin to 13-10. Basha maintained the rest of the way with an ace by Hunte Caldwell pushing its lead to 21-16. A pair of Hamilton attack errors closed the match.

Hamilton, which won the Westwood Tournament of Champions elite bracket and won a lesser bracket at the Nike TOC, was led by senior Taylor Jacobsen with 13 kills and freshman Jordan Middleton with 10.

 Hamilton plays a home region match with Chandler on Thursday and plays in the eight-team Gilbert Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Basha maintains a busy stretch with road games at Desert Ridge Wednesday and Perry on Thursday. Then its on to the Gilbert Invitational.
