Makenzie Elkins needed two points Tuesday night to break into the 1,000-point club and the Empire senior gained entrance in grand style with a 3-pointer to put the Ravens up 7-3 over Pusch Ridge with 3:20 left in the first.

Empire (1-0) went on to win the game 46-41 with Elkins ending the night with 10 points.

“It’s just crazy and I have so much support here tonight,” Elkins said. “To be the second girl in school history to break 1,000 points is incredible and I did it in front of my family from California.”

Senior guard Emily Shreves has 1,375 career points, including 12 in the win over the Lions. Shreves became the first girls in school history to score more than 1,000 career points last year.

The Ravens led 16-15 with 2:47 left in the first half but Pusch Ridge (0-1) took the lead on a 3-pointer from Payton Herder moments later and the Lions held onto the lead until Shreves sank a free throw to give the Ravens a 28-27 lead with 2:35 left in the third.

Both squads built 4-point leads in the contest only to see them squandered until the Ravens started to slowly pull away from a 34-34 tie with 6:04 left in the game. Ivanna Renteria hit a 3 to break the tie but Isabelle Shepperd hit two free throws to cut the lead down to 37-36 with 5:38 left.

Sarah Lewis put the Ravens up 39-36 and then Elkins made two free throws to put her team up 41-36 with 4:46 left. Angel Addleman finished with a game-high 13 points and her last three came on free throws to cut the Raven lead down to 41-39 with 2:01 left. Ava Ramaley scored 15 seconds later to help build a 43-39 lead and then Shreves came in with the dagger to put the Ravens up 46-39 with 1:15 left. Cherish Gotcher scored with 28 seconds left for the final 46-41 margin.

Ramaley ended the night with 10 points and Sydney Soto added seven for Pusch Ridge.

The Lions will take on Marana Friday morning to open up the “Big School” Boyd Baker Tournament held at Sahuaro and the Ravens will play Sunnyside in the next game.

Across the state, Globe senior Robert Burries has 2,300 career points. Burries is averaging over 700 points a year and he poured in 816 last year. At his rate, Burries has an outside shot at breaking the state record, currently held by former Estrella Foothills standout Corey Hawkins. Hawkins finished with 3,154 career points and former Shadow Mountain standout Mike Bibby scored 3,002 career points in the upper division.

On the girl’s side, Gilbert twin sisters Haley and Hannah Cavinder are on the verge of breaking 2,000 career points this year. Haley has 1,628 career points and Hannah has 1,550 as of Monday night. Only 28 girls in the history of Arizona basketball have scored more than 2,000 career points with 11 reaching that milestone in the last five years and five of those did it last year.
