Soccer: Coyote Classic champions crowned

Red Mountain capped a perfect 5-0 showing with a 3-0 win over Desert Ridge in the Girls B Division of the Coyote Classic at Campo Verde High School. (AzPreps365 photo).

Playing through fog in the morning, comfortable warmth in the afternoon and a definite chill in the evening, three schools emerged as champions Saturday at the annual Coyote Classic Soccer Tournament at Campo Verde High School.

Semifinals were contested at Campo Verde and Williams Field high schools and the finals took place in succession at Campo Verde to close the weeklong tournament.

The winners:

Red Mountain girls - The Mountain Lions (5-1) prevailed in the B Division with a 3-0 win over previously unbeaten Desert Ridge. (9-1-1). Red Mountain didn't take long to gain the advantage getting a goal in the second minute from Jessie Boult. Dominating play at its end to the somewhat short-handed Jaguars, Red Mountain's lead was 2-0 in the 15th minute due to an own-goal.

Desert Ridge, which won its own tournament last weekend in perfect fashion, held its own in the second half until the 72nd minute. That's when Erin Brady tallied for the game's final goal. Red Mountain won all five of its tournament matches defeating Maryvale, Seton Catholic, Mountain View in pool play, Queen Creek in the foggy semis (2-0) and finally Desert Ridge.

Perry girls -- The Pumas won a tourney title for the third year in a row, taking the A Division with a  2-0 victory over host Campo Verde. 

Joey Lujan got things started with a goal in the 10th minute from 25 yards out. Brenna Alderson struck for an insurance goal i the 49th minute from the top of the box. Alderson and Lujan each had a goal in Perry's 3-0 semifinal win over Pinnacle.

Perry outscored its opponents 20-0 in the tournament. The Pumas bested Willow Canyon, Gilbert and Highland in pool play before notching their final wins in the semis and final. The Pumas are 6-0 for the year. Their other win was 4-1 over Red Mountain in a season-opening power-ranking match. Campo Verde reached the title match with a 0-0 2 OT, 2-1 PK triumph over Chaparral. Keeper Catherine Corlett collected three saves in helping Campo survive the shootout.

                                               Perry's girls made it three Coyote Classic titles in a row with its win over Campo Verde.Campo Verde boys -- The Coyotes played a strong second half and connected on the championship match's only goal in the 64th minute to edge Perry, 1-0. Jorge Chavez did the honors after some jostling in the box off a what began with a throw-in.

The Coyotes eliminated defending tournament champion Chandler, rallying for two goals in the final 10 minutes for a 2-1 victory in the semifinals. Goals by Kyler Curry in the 72nd minute and Drew Christensen in the 77th minute erased the 1-0 lead Chandler gained on Josh Leal's tally a few minutes earlier. Campo Verde, the defending 5A state champs, won all six of its matches in the tournament and is 7-0 for the season. Perry reached the final going to PK's to edge Corona del Sol. Perry posted a 5-1 record in the tournament.
