Baseball: Window Rock, Page split important 3A North Region doubleheader

The Page Sand Devils remain one game ahead of the Window Rock Fighting Scouts for second place in the 3A North Region.

Page and Window Rock split a pair of region baseball games in Fort Defiance on Tuesday afternoon. Window Rock won the first game, 7-2, as sophomore righthander Rainer Morgan threw a seven hitter, striking seven batters.

Page captured the nightcap, 15-9, in a slugfest, as the Sand Devils had 14 hits, including a solo homer and a three-run shot. Window Rock had 13 hits, including a two-run homer.

Chinle leads the 3A North Region with a 5-1 record and the Wildcats are 11-4 overall. Page is in second place with a 4-2 region mark and the Sand Devils are 8-11 overall. Window Rock is 5-3 in the region and the Fighting Scouts are 8-10 overall.

First Game

Page took a 2-0 lead through the top half of the third inning. Window Rock crossed the plate three times on a three-base error by Kameron Jishie. The Fighting Scouts added s run in the fourth inning, when Jay Roger Lizer lined a single into left field. Rainer Morgan ripped a single into center field, driving home Lizer for a 4-2 lead.

Fighting Scouts' Jishie was walked intentionally in the fifth inning. Aaron Morgan walked. With two outs, Phillip Perkins singled into left centerfield for a two-run single.

Window Rock scored its final run of the game in the sixth inning. Lizer led off the inning with a sharp single into the left centerfield power alley. Jishie's double into leftfield drove home Lizer for the Fighting Scouts' final run of the first game.

Trevor Mallavia was the losing pitcher. He allowed six runs on five hits. Kimball Begay relieved Mallavia with one out in the fifth inning. He gave up one run and five hits.

Colin Whitehorse and Cheyenne Richardson had two hits apiece to lead Page at the plate.

Rainer Morgan, Kameron Jishie and JayRoger Lizer each had two hits apiece for Window Rock.

Second Game

Page rallied from a 7-2 deficit to post a 15-9 region victory over Window Rock in the nightcap.

Page's Kimball Begay led off the fifth inning with a sharp single into centerfield. Ian Lane walked to put runners on second and first base. Trevor Mallavia belted a three-run homer over the left field fence. Harry Bowman was inserted as a relief pitcher for Window Rock. Bowman walked Colin Whitehorse. Cheyenne Richardson cracked a run scoring single into right centerfield. Window Rock continued its lead, 7-6.

Window Rock's Phillip Perkins led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single into right field. LaShawn Platero followed with a double. Lizer's sacrifice fly drove home Perkins. Platero scored on a throwing error, as the Fighting Scouts held a 9-6 lead.

Page's Kimball Begay lead off the sixth inning with a two-bagger into right centerfield. Ian Lane walked and Mallavia singled into right centerfield. Begay scored when Whitehorse was hit-by-pitch. Richardson ripped a two-run single.

Freshman Hunter Richardson belted a three-run triple. Richardson crossed the plate on Begay's RBI double. Lane's double scored Begay. The Sand Devils tallied eight runs for a 15-9 lead.

Page's Seth Torrey cracked a solo homer in the second inning. In the bottom half of the second inning, Window Rock's Harry Bowman belted a two-run homer.

Relief pitcher Ezra Larson was the winning pitcher. Relief pitcher Aaron Morgan suffered the loss.

Kimball Begay led Page with three hits. With two hits apiece were Ian Lane, Trevor Mallavia and Cheyenne Richardson.

Rainer Morgan, Harry Bowman, Kameron Jishie, Aaron Morgan, and Phillip Perkins had two hits apiece for Window Rock.
