Ismael Alvizo is soft-spoken and polite off of the football field, but during a game the sound of his crushing tackles can be heard from miles around.

Alvizo, known to his teammates as “Ish,” arrived at Bourgade Catholic after playing three seasons at nearby Saint Mary’s. He said that his relationship with head coach Marcel Lopez, who coached Saint Mary’s from 2015 to 2017, influenced his decision to transfer to Bourgade.

“I just wanted to come join the culture that they have here,” Alvizo said. “After seeing coach Lopez at Saint Mary’s and seeing what he could do, I knew this was where I wanted to be.”

Although the transfer process can oftentimes be difficult on players, Alvizo insists that the most difficult transition was simply learning how to play in Bourgade’s system.

“Just opening the playbook and getting into that was the hardest part,” he said. “My teammates really encouraged me to try harder and keep memorizing the plays.”

While Alvizo has only appeared in six games for Bourgade, his coaches have noticed significant improvements in his game and his ability to lead.

“He’s taking on leadership, not just verbally but with actions,” said defensive coordinator Nick Gomez. “Just bringing that can-do attitude every day to practice.”

Bourgade Catholic has a 5-1 record since Alvizo arrived on campus, including a five-game winning streak that dates back to Sept. 6. Gomez emphasized his role in the win streak, making note of his versatility and mental toughness.

“Very big role,” said Gomez. “He’s able to play different positions at different times. He’s somebody that we’ve been able to lean on, not just at linebacker but at strong safety as well.”

Alvizo’s play at linebacker has made it nearly impossible for opposing teams to run the ball against the Golden Eagles, and he has been an excellent change-of-pace running back for the team when starter Josh Dreher needs a rest. Alvizo has rushed for over 200 yards and five touchdowns during Bourgade Catholic’s win streak. He has also made 33 total tackles over that span and was named defensive player of the game in Bourgade’s 45-0 victory over Cortez on Sept. 6.

“He never gives up,” Dreher said. “Every time he runs the ball, every time he hits someone he keeps going. It’s pretty amazing to see as a teammate and you can tell the spectators love it too.”

Though they are partners in Bourgade Catholic’s prolific backfield, Dreher and Alvizo’s relationship extends far beyond the confines of the football field.

“The funny thing is we actually have five or six classes together so I have to see him every day” Dreher said. “We always talk football and laugh with each other. It’s a good friendship we can carry outside of high school and outside of football too.”

With only four regular season games remaining, Alvizo will look to continue his dominant performance for a Bourgade team that is currently tied for first in their division.
