Flowers, candy, balloons, and signed team pictures littered the bleachers as six seniors stood in the middle of the court with tears brimming their eyes.

The St. Mary's Knights played the Buffaloes of Tempe High School and walked away with a clean sweep in their last home game of the season.

The student section was anything but quiet, encouraging the Knights to show off their talent one last time.

Senior captain Karla Ramirez, a four-year varsity starter and outside hitter, dominated all three sets with aggressive offense, finishing with 19 kills, two aces and one block.

“I feel like we could’ve done a little bit better, but we all had fun which is what matters,” said Ramirez.

Going into the game, head coach September Lopez said she expected to see execution from her girls, this being the last game they would play on their court this season.

After the game, Lopez, along with the team, had tears in their eyes as the realization of their last home game together hit them.

“Putting all six seniors on the court and seeing them go on a 4-0 run was kind of emotional," Lopez said.

Senior libero Rylee Estrella also felt emotional as she stood on the sideline looking at the court after the game.

“I feel like as seniors we all put in our heart because it was our last game and we wanted this bad,” said Estrella.

Estrella played a crucial role in this win with her passing, control of the bac krow, and communication.

Although this was the last home game of the season, the Knights' work is far from over. The Knights are ranked in the top 10 of their conference and are looking for to be the highest seed when entering playoffs.

Before going into playoffs, the team hopes to improve on their consistency when it comes to every ball.

“We have to make sure we continue to execute every ball. We do that but sometimes we die down,” said junior outside hitter Leilani Clark.

Leilani finished the night with four kills and four aces to help the Knights in their win (25-13, 25-11, 25-14) against the Buffaloes.

The Knights plan to head into practice this week with playoffs in mind.

“We have to keep practice fast," Lopez said. "The last couple games of the season have been slow, so we have to make sure we’re keeping the fast tempo for postseason."

After playoffs, Lopez plans to look within the program to find the next players for the 2020 season. The team is comprised of mostly upperclassmen with six seniors, four juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman.

“I look within the program…I trust that each level is doing their job,” said Lopez.
