Corona Del Sol rolls over Mountain Pointe to cap off regular season

November 3, 2019 by Jonathan Dimaline, Arizona State University

Corona Del Sol huddled up after their final regular-season win.

Heading into Tuesday's final regular-season game, the Aztecs carried an astounding overall record of 31-8 with a No. 2 ranking in the state.

Coming off a tough loss to the Desert Vista Thunder last week, Corona Del Sol turned things around against Mountain Pointe on senior night.

It only took the Aztecs three sets to win their final match at home, 25-10, 25-14 and 25-18.

Senior night could not have gone any better for this talented Corona Del Sol team.

“We have 10 seniors, so it was really good to get them all out on the court and dominate in their last match before the state tournament,” head coach Ben Maxfield said.

Corona Del Sol was led by talented senior Nicole Newlin, who delivered a match-high 11 kills on the night.

“It was a perfect way for us to end the regular season, and now we are looking forward to the final tournament,” Newlin said.

The Aztecs set the tone on their home court, looking for a spark to get them through their last game and carry their play into the state tournament.

“Tonight’s match was a good game for us to get back on track," Maxfield said. "We did not play too well last week, so it is nice to get our offense running the way we would like and carry the momentum into the tournament."

Senior hitter Madelyn Noble, alongside Newlin, had eight kills on 20 attempts with a .300 hit percentage.

Noble and Newlin have seemed to be the answer for the Aztecs throughout the entire regular season and demonstrated how dominant they can be together in the match Tuesday.

On the other side of the ball, the Aztecs displayed excellent defense with a 1.000 dig percentage led by senior libero Becca Morse, who was 19-for-19 on digs.

“We really worked together as a team tonight to turn things around and get things working the way we wanted them to,” said Morse.

The Corona Del Sol Aztecs will compete in the 6A state tournament beginning Nov. 5.
