Perry's Dynamic Duo: The Purdy Brothers

November 16, 2019 by Edwin Perez, Arizona State University

It is a rare sight to see two brothers dominate in the same sport in the same position. In football, one example of this is with Eli and Peyton Manning, who have been successful quarterbacks in the NFL.

Other examples are rare, but the East Valley boasts a budding brother dynamic duo in Brock and Chubba Purdy.

The Purdy brothers are quarterbacks who both have started for Perry High School and been productive during their time there. They have a combined 15,247 passing yards and 170 touchdowns.

Where there is such production, college scholarship offers invariably follow.

Brock Purdy is the sophomore starter at Iowa State where he has put up 5,099 passing yards and 36 scores so far.

During his time at Perry, he threw for 8,932 yards and 107 touchdowns. He won Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year honors as a senior.

He did not receive national attention right away. In fact, his first Power 5 offer came 48 hours prior to the early-signing period. His patience is what led him to see many offers come, including a preferred walk-on offer to Alabama, but he ultimately chose Iowa State.

Chubba, whose real name is Preston, is currently a senior at Perry who has committed to Louisville. He received college attention early on and made his commitment before this season.

Heading into the playoffs, Chubba has 6,122 yards and 61 touchdown passes in his prep career. He hopes to improve his numbers while helping his third-seeded team hopefully advance to the 6A conference championship.

The brother connection did not start off with both at quarterback. Instead, Brock was the quarterback and Chubba was his main receiver. Both the brothers’ favorite memory came from when Brock threw a pass to Chubba.

“I was in 6th grade and he had to be in 4th grade and there was a championship game with rain falling,” Brock Purdy said. “I threw a bomb to him and he caught it and then dove onto the pylon like he was an NFL receiver. I just always gave him a hard time that he was my receiver.”

Although they love to give each other a hard time like most brothers do, both have high praise for each other’s quarterback skills.

Brock said that Chubba has “all the tools to be a great quarterback” and added “his arm is stronger than mine.”

Chubba is so impressed with what Brock did in his freshman year and added the way he leads his team and how he prepares is “so impressive”.

Chubba got to see the way his brother prepared from his time he backed up Brock and learned so much from being his back up during Brock’s time at Perry.

Their time at Perry has not only been productive but also has made a huge impact on both of the brothers. From Perry coach Preston Jones, they both were taught how to develop their talent, discipline and humility.

When it comes to the impact the brothers have had on this program, Jones feels he may never see two players like this again.

“I doubt I will ever coach two kids like this again. At least simultaneously.” Jones said.

Although their time at Perry has come to an end, the impact they left at Perry will be always felt and the bond the brothers have will always be there. Chubba called Brock “his second dad.”

The lessons both have learned from each other have helped get them to where they are today. Both of the brothers are competitive so they are always competing with each other both on and off the field.

“Every week, we both try to beat each others stats,” Chubba said. “I think you see it in our faces that we both go out and compete.”

While both are serious when they are off the field, they enjoy making each other laugh and the comedic side of things. One skill both share off the field is their ability to impersonate people.

“Everyone thinks that we can impersonate people really well and always make people laugh,” Chubba said.

The only way they are different, Chubba said, is Brock keeps his sense of humor largely under wraps. “He is very funny, although he seems always serious and people always see me laughing and smiling.”

Apart from comedy, two huge factors in life for the brothers are family and religion. Whether on social media or in life, neither allows sports be the focal point of everything.

Their parents have instilled in them that football is not everything. God, sports and who they are outside of football is everything. For the brothers, it is the foundation of who they are.

Their family truly does everything together when it comes to sporting events, dinners and activities like that, which is something the Purdy brothers are truly proud of. Each time either one steps on the field, they show how proud they are to be a Purdy and remember the sacrifices their parents have given them to get to the point where they are today.

The relationship that the brothers have is hard to capture in very few words.

Brock said that their relationship is “Caring, loving, comedic, competitive and supportive.” While Chubba added, “We always have fun together.”

I have five words to describe their relationship and them overall:

Professional-Both carry themselves with a high standard and act accordingly.

Promising-Both have promising futures with the production they have shown already.

Caring-They see each other as best friends and want the best for each other.

Loving-The brotherly love is present in both of them and obvious in the way they talk about each other.

Close-They do everything with each other. Even with how busy both are, they both are there for each other at all times. They talk to each other at least twice a week to keep up with each other and check in through text or phone calls.

Whether it’s a phone call late at night or after a tiring two-hour practice, the connection the Purdy brothers have is strong and always on display.
