Sahuarita beat Douglas 2-0 Saturday afternoon to capture the championship of the 21st Annual Palo Verde Invitational. Sophomore Lina Bracamonte put the Mustangs up 1-0 in the 11th minute and that score held up until Alexia Irigoyen hit Rylee Arrington on a corner kick in the 42nd minute for the 2-0 margin.

Freshman goalie Hayle Salcido collected six saves for Sahuarita. Salcido is one of eight freshmen playing for the Mustangs. Throw in nine sophomores and only three seniors, and this has to be one of the youngest teams in the state. Not only young but dominating.

Freshman forward Arrington leads the team with 15 goals, sophomore forward Bracamonte has 14 and freshman forward Sam Wright has 12 to go along with 11 assists.

Salcido and fellow freshman goalie Mireya Colorado have combined for 38 saves to help lead the team to a 9-3 record overall, 4-1 in power-ranking matches and 2-1 in the 3A South Region.

Douglas is 8-4 overall and 2-1 in power-ranking games with region play still two weeks away. The Bulldogs were led by Venezia Galindo last year but the team lost six seniors to graduation. The Bulldogs will host Flowing Wells (7-4) on Jan. 14.

The two teams did not face each other at the Palo Verde Invitational but Douglas did beat the Caballeros 2-0 in November to start the season. Flowing Wells beat Casa Grande 2-1 in the third place game. Freshman Breesa Cruz scored both goals and Maya Galicia scored the lone goal for Casa Grande.

Sahuarita will host Empire (1-4) on Tuesday.  Tanque Verde beat Cholla 3-2 in the 5th Place game and Palo Verde beat Sabino via forfeit in the early match.
