Girls, boys hoops: Winslow girls victorious; Chinle girls, boys win

GIRLS

WINSLOW 72, CANYON VIEW 31

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs chalked up an impressive 72-31 victory over the Canyon View Jaguars in a freedom girl's basketball game in Don Petranovich Gymnasium in Winslow on Friday night.

Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan said the Lady Bulldogs turned in an impressive performance.

"My team played good all around team basketball," Jordan said.

Winslow took a 21-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs extended its lead to 21 point lead, 38-17.

Winslow shot extremely well in the third quarter, netting 23 points. Canyon View canned 11 points. The Lady Bulldogs took a 61-28 lead when the third period expired. Winslow outscored Canyon View, 11-3, during the fourth quarter.

Winslow sophomore standout Kylie Begay led all scorers, pouring in 20 points. Sierra Singer added 14 points and Andrea Willeto tallied 10 points for Winslow.

Caiden Spickler led Canyon View with 18 points.

Winslow, 10-7, overall. entertains Show Low on January 14 in a 3A East Region ball game at 6 p.m.

Canyon View dropped to 10-9 overall.

GIRLS

CHINLE 52, KAYENTA MONUMENT VALLEY 41

Aisha Ashley, Tea Murray and Meishla Begay combined for 41 points to lead the Chinle Lady Wildcats to a 52-41 victory over the Kayenta Monument Valley Lady Mustangs in 3A North Region girl' basketball action in Kayenta on Friday night.

Ashley knocked down a game high 18 points. Murray added 12 points and Begay tallied 11 points in a winning effort.

Sheridan Curley and Angel Holiday both scored 12 points to pace the Lady Mustangs.

Kayenta Monument Valley raced out to a 17-5 first quarter lead. Chinle battled back in the second quarter, netting 19 points and the Lady Mustangs canned 11 points. Kayenta Monument Valley took a 28-24 lead at halftime.

Chinle outscored Kayenta Monument Valley, 15-6, to take a 39-34 advantage in the third quarter. Chinle put the game away, scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter. The Lady Mustangs managed three points during the fourth stanza.

Chinle head coach Fran McCurtain said the Lady Mustangs took advantage of the Lady Wildcats' slow start.

"We did not start off well at all," McCurtain said. "We got down right off the bat, 17-5. We had to change our defense and stop submitting to pressure."

McCurtain said MV played well to begin the game.

"MV came out fast and strong," McCutain said. "They got us back on our heels. In the first quarter, we had 13 turnovers. We had to regain composure and play smarter by moving the ball and make complete passes."

McCurtain continued, "In the third quarter, we finally started to get out of the mud and catch a rhythm. Our girls did a great job on defense and it started to help with our transition offense. We finally pulled through and kept the lead for the win."

Chinle, 8-5 overall, continues 3A North Region play today, hosting the Ganado Lady Hornets, 16-1 overall in the Wildcat Den at 6 p.m.

Kayenta Monument Valley, 5-7 overall, will travel to Page, 12-2 overall, to face the Lady Sand Devils today at 6 p.m

BOYS

CHINLE 62, KAYENTA MONUMENT VALLEY 34

The Chinle Wildcats posted a 62-34 victory over the Kayenta Monument Valley Mustangs in a 3A North Region game in Kayenta on Friday night.

Chinle raced out to a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats outscored the Mustangs, 17-14, for a 34-22 halftime advantage.

The Wildcats outscored the Mustangs, 19-7, for a 53-29 lead at the end of the third period. Chinle outscored Kayenta Monument Valley, 9-5, in the fourth quarter.

Albramdon Byjoe tallied 12 points to lead Kayenta Monument Valley.

Chinle head coach Raul Mendozs praised his team's defense.

"Defensively, we did a great job in the first quarter," Mendoza said. "That gave us a good lead that enabled us to put them away."

Chinle senior standout Cooper Burbank led all scorers, pouring in 24 points. Curtis Begay added 13 points for the Wildcats.

Chinle, 13-7 overall, entertain the Ganado Hornets today at 7:30 p.m. in a 3A North Region contest.

Kayenta Monument Valley, 9-4 overall, travel to Page to face the Sand Devils in a 3A North Region ball game today.
