Faith over everything

Xavier Prep athletic director and golf coach Sister Lynn Winsor impacts the lives of young athletes and faculty through her faith in the Lord.

Arriving in 1974, Sister Winsor was given the position to coach the golf team. At first, she was given the job as one of her responsibilities, but now she views it differently.

For 46 years, Sister Winsor has made it a goal to show Christ through her coaching to impact athletes to be women of God and to have faith in themselves.

Her goal as a coach is to make sure the team believes in themselves and Jesus and always remember to be kind to each other and their competitors.

“We are a faith-based school,” Sister Winsor said. “The whole scope of religion here is important.”

To Sister Winsor, bonding is a key aspect of having a successful team surrounded by faith. Sister Winsor has been surrounded by faith for her whole life and sees how big of a difference it makes in the team’s performance each match.

Tui Selvaratnam, associate head coach of the Xavier golf team, said that before every match, they have a prayer to prepare their minds for the upcoming match and to be leaders of Christ on and off the course.

“This team is very close with one another as a family,” Selvaratnam said. “Sister Winsor has a huge impact on these girls when it comes to demonstrating kindness and teamwork.”

Since Sister Winsor started coaching, Xavier has won 36 state championships.

Through faith alone, Sister Winsor is committed to not only winning tournaments but being sure that the team has fun while it plays.

Sister Winsor believes that if the girls have fun and create relationships with every player, they understand that winning isn't paramount. She is proud to say that the players have done just that.

Creating relationships through everyone they are in contact with is what Xavier golf is known for. For every match, the team makes dozens of cookies for the golf course staff, opposing teams, and themselves.

“We do this because we want to show them how much we appreciate them.” Sister Winsor said. “We’ve been doing this for years.”

The team also brings enough Gatorade and snacks for themselves and for the opposing team and coaches as well. Doing this has shown many teams across their division the thoughtfulness of Xavier golf.

To this day, past Xavier golf alumni come and visit Sister Winsor and the team because the players never forget the dynamic and how faith-driven the team was.

“We sometimes have past players come in and talk to the girls about the game of golf,” Sister Winsor said. “They even talk about college golf and the LPGA.”

Xavier golf alumni, current players, and coaching staff enjoy the atmosphere of the team dynamic Sister Winsor has created and how she has left her mark driven by faith to everyone she encounters.

Sister Winsor says she was “called by the Lord” to take on the coaching position and she has not regretted that decision since the day she started.
