D-II First Round: Ironwood Ridge leads; Calynne Rosholt leads by four strokes

Cactus Shadows senior Calynne Rosholt shot a 4-under par 69 Monday during first round action at the AIA D-II State Championship taking place at the OMNI Tucson National Catalina Course. Rosholt holds a four-stroke lead over Ironwood Ridge junior Raina Ports heading into the final round on Tuesday.

Rosholt transferred to Cactus Shadow from Texas after her junior year and the ASU commit is the daughter of former Arizona State standout Lynne (Mikulas) Rosholt. Lynne Rosholt was a member of the NCAA 1990 National Championship team.

The Falcons led early but Ironwood Ridge pulled away at the turn and ended the round with a 298 to 309 lead over Cactus Shadows with Ports, her sister Hannah Ports, Zoe Newell and Celia Schrecker taking up spots 2 to 5 for the Nighthawks.

Cactus Shadows has seven state titles including three in a row from 2016 to 2018 but Ironwood Ridge beat Cactus Shadows by five strokes last year (592 to 597) bring home the first state championship in program history. The Falcons defeated the Nighthawks in 2018.

Playing as individuals, Ironwood Ridge also took third at the National Golf Championships in August.

Former Catalina Foothills standout Maya Benita won the individual title last year and she is now playing for Arizona. Current Salpointe standout Mackenzie McRee won the title in 2018.

Salpointe (338) is in third place and Catalina Foothills (343) is in fourth. The leaders will tee off at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
