Junior and team captain Gabriel Huerta-McWhiter spent the offseason with a goal in mind.

After making second team all-region last season, the Tempe Prep leader is setting a new standard for himself as he aims to make first team all-region during 2021.

Huerta-McWhiter has led the Knights to a 6-10 start to begin their season.

“I worked out with a trainer and played for my club team all summer long.”

It is this drive and determination that has motivated Huerta-McWhiter. “It’s super important for me to be a team captain and a leader because I can reach the players and make sure we are on the same page.

His father Bob sees his son as a team-oriented player. “One thing I am most proud of him for is his ability to be just as likely to share the ball with his teammates as he is to take the ball to the hoop.”

Gabriel is a true team player and enjoys being with his teammates off the court as he does on the court. “Being able to play with those guys is great and getting out of the house to play basketball with them is awesome.”

Basketball may be Gabriel’s main focus but it’s not the only sport he participates in at Tempe Prep. He also is a part of the school’s swim team when he isn’t out on the hardwood. Huerta-McWhiter loves the challenge. Being on the swim team might even be helping Gabriel out on the court.

“Swim is the hardest exercise I do and it actually helps me prepare my body for basketball in a different way than others do.”

Gabriel said it gives him an advantage on his opponents when it comes to late-game scenarios.

Gabriel and the Knights are ready to continue their early success throughout the rest of the young season.
