No. 34 Mountain View beat No. 25 Flowing Wells 46-7 Saturday night to improve to 2-4 on the year in a game played at Tucson High with the Flowing Wells home field still not ready for competition after a complete overhaul of the turf and lighting at the John M. Mead Stadium this past summer.

The Caballeros fell to 3-4 on the year with a trip scheduled to No. 31 Buena (1-4) next week. The sod at Mead stadium should be ready by the Nov. 5 tilt with No. 40 Cholla (1-4) or Senior Night on Nov. 12 against No. 8 Salpointe (4-2). The last unofficial “home” game will be played at Tucson High once again on Oct. 29 against No. 1 Desert View (5-1).

Pusch Ridge (field and track), Salpointe (lights) and Douglas (artificial turf) were the other programs to have major upgrades completed this past summer in Southern Arizona.

The Mountain Lions dominated on both ends of the ball with sophomore QB William Howell throwing for 230 yards on 9 of 13 attempts with three TDs and a rushing TD. Josh Roman added 61 more yards passing on five completions. Dillon Arvayo pulled in 97 yards on 3 receptions including a 69-yard scoring grab.

Dillon Johnson had 86 yards receiving on 3 catches with a 15-yard score and Deven Sanchez had 3 catches for 64 yards. Roman also caught a 13-yard TD catch from Howell and he ran in for another TD. Tairiq Booker had 49 yards rushing with a score and Dominic Roebuck finished with 43 yards on the ground. In all, the Mountain Lions put together 454 yards of offense while limiting the Caballeros to 162 yards with Tyler Evans collecting 77 yards on the ground. Wyatt Jones had 26 yards rushing including TD run.

Mountain View hosts Desert View next week with a chance to make some noise in the 5A Southern Region that includes Salpointe, Buena, Cholla and Flowing Wells. Region play has no bearing on the state playoff at the 5A level but the next set of rankings will be released on Tuesday so expect a lot of movement with Salpointe beating Desert View and Mountain View beating Flowing Wells. No. 12 Marana beat No. 10 Sunnyside in the 5A Sonoran Region so those two squads might switch positions when the rankings are released.
